The Murphy lab studies the genetics of the p53 suppressor protein, focusing on genetic variants of p53 that exist in populations of African-descent (P47S and Y107H) and Ashkenazi Jewish (G334R). Dr. Murphy seeks to understand the impact of these genetic variants of p53 on cancer risk and the efficacy of cancer therapy, using cell lines and animal models. Dr. Murphy also studies the cancer-survival protein HSP70. Her lab employs a novel series of HSP70 inhibitors for melanoma and colorectal cancer therapy. A bachelor's degree in a science-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Excellent communication and organization skills are essential. Competitive applicants will have strong motivation to learn and to work in a collaborative environment. Experience in the following areas is preferred: cell biology/cell culture, molecular biology (qPCR, western blotting). Candidates will receive personalized training as required.
