Job Description
We are seeking a motivated undergraduate student to join our research team focusing on the evolutionary history and biodiversity of the Fabaceae (pea) family. This position provides hands-on experience in molecular biology and botanical systematics, specifically focusing on the genera Acmispon and Hosackia . The successful candidate will contribute to a project aimed at resolving the phylogenetic relationships within these groups using modern molecular techniques. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in genetics, ecology, botany, or evolutionary biology to gain professional laboratory experience. The student will work 10-15 hours per week during the months of May and June 2026. The Research Assistant will be trained in and responsible for the following tasks:
Plant Identification:
Utilizing taxonomic keys and herbarium specimens to identify species within the Acmispon and Hosackia genera.Molecular Lab Work:
• Performing DNA Extractions from fresh, frozen, or silica-dried plant tissues. Conducting PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to amplify specific chloroplast and nuclear gene regions. Preparing samples for Sanger Sequencing .Data Analysis:
Managing sequence data and assisting in Molecular Systematics workflows, including sequence alignment and basic Phylogenetic tree construction and GenBank sequence submission.Lab Maintenance:
Maintaining a detailed lab notebook, preparing buffers/reagents, and ensuring a clean, organized workspace.Scientific writing:
Convey research in technical terms for scientific publication by writing sections as methods, results, and interpretation within the discussion to a scientific audience. Must be a current UVU undergraduate student majoring in Biology or Botany. Strong attention to detail and fine motor skills (for handling small tissue samples). Ability to work independently after initial training and follow strict laboratory protocols. Completed (or currently enrolled in)BOT 4200
plant systematics at UVU.Preferred Skills:
Prior experience with micropipetting or basic molecular lab techniques. An interest in California flora or the Fabaceae family. Basic familiarity with bioinformatics software (e.g., Geneious, MEGA, or R). Prior experience with scientific communication, including reading and interpreting scientific literature, scientific writing, and science communication.Technical Expertise:
Master the fundamental "Wet Lab" skills required for graduate school or industry positions in biotechnology.Evolutionary Insight:
Gain a deep understanding of how molecular data is used to define species boundaries and evolutionary lineages.Mentorship:
