Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
This position performs duties in support of the operations of the city's natural gas distribution system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Investigates, identifies, and repairs gas leaks. Completes reports and maintains related documentation. Responds to customer questions and concerns. Inspects gas piping for atmospheric corrosion and leaks. Performs new line installations. Performs meter sets and change-outs. Assists in the construction of regulator stations. Performs field duties pertaining to gas system infrastructure. Locates and marks underground gas lines. Disconnects and reconnects gas services. Performs weekly vehicle inspections. Loads and unloads parts and materials. Participates in facilities and landscaping maintenance. Assists with training unqualified personnel. Performs inventory as needed. Performs landscaping as needed. Participates in on-call rotation schedule and responds to after-hours emergencies. Operates a variety of hand and power tools. Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, trackhoe, dump truck, etc. Pours and finishes concrete. Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of department safety policies and procedures. Knowledge of natural gas system maintenance and repair principles. Knowledge of natural gas system standards and specifications. Knowledge of safety regulations. Knowledge of area streets and roads. Knowledge of equipment operation guidelines. Skills in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment. Skills in problem solving. Skills in interpersonal relations. Skills in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Gas Assistant Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include NACE standards, the State of Georgia Code Title 46, the Code of Federal Regulations, the Natural Gas Fuel Code, city and county ordinances, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance and repair of the natural gas system. Successful performance contributes to the efficient and effective resolution of problems and the delivery of efficient utility services to customers.
CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with coworkers, other department personnel, contractors, vendors, property owners, customers, and the general public. Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, walking, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed in a stockroom, warehouse, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and natural gas. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school or equivalent. One to two years of service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
