Role Overview:
BEPC is seeking an early-career PhD Scientist I with expertise in complex in vitro systems to support the development and implementation of advanced human lung models for translational safety and drug development programs. This highly hands-on laboratory role focuses on airway models, 3D lung structures, and engineered in vitro systems designed to support innovative therapeutic research. The ideal candidate will have strong laboratory experience working with transwell cultures, lung organoids, air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures, and complex co-culture systems. This position is particularly well-suited for candidates with a background in Bioengineering or related disciplines who are passionate about building and characterizing advanced airway model systems. Experience with dry lab/data analysis tools is considered a plus. Key Responsibilities:
Develop, optimize, and implement advanced complex in vitro lung systems, including airway and alveolar organoids, transwell cultures, air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures, and lung-on-a-chip platforms. Build and characterize 3D airway model systems and engineered lung structures to support translational safety and drug development initiatives. Perform hands-on laboratory work involving cell culture, co-culture systems, tissue model maintenance, and experimental assay execution. Work daily across multiple scientific platforms, instrumentation systems, and analytical technologies to support model characterization and qualification studies. Design and execute experiments to evaluate cell viability, morphology, barrier integrity, and functional responses using techniques such as confocal imaging, high-content imaging, permeability assays, transcriptomics, and proteomics. Culture and maintain multiple lung cell types, including primary lung cells and established cell lines. Analyze, interpret, and communicate complex scientific data and experimental findings to internal collaborators and stakeholders. Collaborate cross-functionally with scientific teams to support therapeutic program goals and complex model development strategies. Maintain detailed electronic laboratory documentation in accordance with SOPs and quality standards. Support troubleshooting, protocol optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives for complex in vitro model systems.Required Qualifications:
PhD in Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Toxicology, or a related scientific discipline. 0-5 years of post-PhD experience in academia or industry. Strong hands-on laboratory experience with complex in vitro systems and lung-focused research projects. Experience with transwell cultures, lung organoids, airway models, and air-liquid interface (ALI) culture systems. Experience developing or supporting 3D tissue structures and engineered in vitro model systems. Proficiency with cell culture techniques involving primary lung cells and relevant cell lines. Ability to work effectively across multiple scientific platforms and technologies in a laboratory setting. Experience with characterization techniques such as qRT-PCR, RNA-seq, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, and high-content imaging/screening. Strong experimental design, troubleshooting, and protocol optimization skills. Excellent collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.Preferred Qualifications:
Bioengineering background highly preferred. Experience in lung biology and immunology. Familiarity with dry lab skills, including computational analysis, image analysis, or data processing workflows. Experience with MATLAB and/or Python for image processing and large-scale data analysis. Experience supporting complex airway model development and microphysiological systems.
