The Department of Chemistry is one of the academic departments within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, consisting of thirty employees. The main purpose of the department is the education of students in the discipline of chemistry. The Department of Chemistry offers the BS and BA degrees at the undergraduate level and the MS at the graduate level. The BS degree is certified by the American Chemical Society. Additionally, through our participation in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry, the department offers the Ph.D. with a Chemistry concentration. The Chemistry Department pledges itself to encourage in the broadest and most liberal manner, the advancement of science and particularly chemistry in all of its branches through its education, research, and service missions.
Job Duties:
This positions primary duties include the setup/delivery of the General and Organic Chemistry laboratory operations to be carried out throughout the calendar year. These high enrollment courses have more than 1100 students equaling between 50-60 lab sections per semester and another 8-10 in the summer.
More specific duties include:
Preparation of lower division (General and Organic Chemistry) teaching laboratories reagents and solutions as well as set-up/dismantling any needed experimental apparatus. To include collection and/or labeling of any hazardous waste within the teaching labs. Supervision and training of departmental student workers in the preparation of teaching laboratory reagents and solutions as well as set-up/dismantling of experimental apparatus within the teaching labs. Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment. Assist faculty, stockroom personnel, and other staff in facilitating purchasing of equipment and apparatus for departmental laboratories. Maintaining the departmental laboratory equipment inventory as well as the chemical inventory as related to teaching labs and prep room. Serving on the Chemistry Department Safety Committee, acting as a liaison with external and other on-campus agencies, such as the Office of Environmental Health & Safety. This position also serves as back-up to stockroom personnel when needed and perform various tasks related to the teaching laboratories as directed by the Chair.
Minimum Education/Experience:
Demonstrated possession of competencies necessary to perform the work. License or Certification Required by

None Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Experience working in a chemistry or biochemistry laboratory setting is preferred. Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills are also preferred. Special Instructions to
