Job Description
Job Title:
Weekend QC Chemist Job Description The Weekend QC Chemist supports the quality control laboratory by performing routine and analytical testing on in-process and finished products, primarily oils, inks, coatings, and related materials. This role is ideal for a current chemistry or science student who wants to gain hands-on experience with ASTM methods and a wide range of laboratory instruments while working a consistent weekend schedule. The chemist follows established procedures, documents results both manually and electronically, and helps ensure that products meet strict quality standards. Responsibilities Perform quality control testing on in-process and finished samples using established ASTM methods. Conduct a variety of analytical tests including titrations, viscosity measurements, flash point, penetration, moisture analysis, infrared (IR) analysis, and gas chromatography (GC), with occasional pH measurements. Follow a work order laid out for each shift and complete all assigned testing within the scheduled time. Document all test results accurately and clearly in both manual records and electronic systems. Prepare, handle, and test oil-based products, greases, solvents, and related materials according to lab procedures. Make grease samples for testing, including preparing formulations and cleaning associated glassware thoroughly after use. Apply proper lab safety and procedures at all times, including safe handling of chemicals, samples, and equipment. Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organization, especially when working with messy oil and grease products. Troubleshoot basic issues with laboratory tests and equipment under established guidelines. Collaborate with other weekend chemists to coordinate coverage, particularly for occasional Sunday shifts. Participate in and complete a structured training program over approximately 4-6 weeks to become fully competent in lab methods and equipment. Support the overall quality control process by communicating any out-of-specification results or unusual findings to appropriate contacts according to lab protocols. Essential Skills Strong theoretical knowledge of chemistry, particularly in analytical and quality control applications. Hands-on familiarity with basic laboratory techniques such as titrations, viscosity measurements, and pH testing. Ability to follow ASTM methods and standard operating procedures accurately and consistently. Computer skills sufficient to enter, manage, and retrieve data in electronic documentation systems. Understanding of lab safety and procedures, including safe handling of chemicals and laboratory equipment. Ability to work independently in the lab, manage a defined workload, and complete all tasks within the shift. Flexibility and commitment to a weekend work schedule, including primary Saturday coverage and occasional Sunday coverage as needed. Clear written documentation skills for recording test methods, observations, and results. Education in chemistry or a closely related scientific field, with ongoing college-level coursework in chemistry. Additional Skills & Qualifications Current college student majoring in Chemistry or a related science; a sophomore, junior, or sr. level student is preferred. Coursework or experience in analytical chemistry and quality control testing. Experience or exposure to gas chromatography (GC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR or IR) is beneficial. Familiarity with working with oil-based products, greases, or solvents is a plus. Demonstrated ability to learn new laboratory methods and instruments during a 4-6 week training period. Interest in maintaining the role throughout the completion of an academic degree to gain sustained industry experience. Comfort working alone in a laboratory environment while adhering strictly to safety and quality procedures. Work Environment The role is based in a full-quality control laboratory within a production facility that formulates and produces oils, inks, coatings, and related products. The lab and facility are somewhat older and can be slightly messy due to the nature of working with oil-based products and greases, but the lab is well-equipped with instruments such as titrators, viscometers, flash point testers, penetration testers, moisture analyzers, IR/FTIR equipment, gas chromatographs, and pH meters. Core products are shipped in 55-gallon drums and bulk liquid containers, and the work includes preparing and testing grease, which can be tedious and requires extensive glassware cleaning. The Weekend QC Chemist typically works alone in the lab on weekend shifts, with a total of about eight technicians at the location overall. The standard schedule is primarily Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the need to occasionally cover Sunday shifts in coordination with another weekend chemist. Training generally takes 4-6 weeks, and the environment supports students who wish to remain in the role while completing their degree. The culture emphasizes flexibility, approachability, and practical learning, offering a strong opportunity to gain real-world laboratory and quality control experience.
