Full Job Description Description:
The Scientist I should be a highly-motivated individual with a graduate degree and 2+ years of laboratory experience in academic or industrial setting, or BS in Chemistry with 5 years of laboratory experience in an industrial setting. The Scientist I will take guidance and direction from the Principal Investigator/R D Manager to effectively support and advance research programs. The Scientist I will be required to conduct practical experiments in the areas of chemical synthesis, polymer chemistry, and/or materials science in order to create chemicals for product development and application testing. The Scientist I should have experience in following synthetic procedures to effectively and reproducibly produce, isolate, and purify chemicals to required yield and purity standards. The Scientist I will support product development activities by developing and producing new and existing compounds. The Scientist I will work closely with other Scientists, Principal Investigators, and Production and Process Engineers to effectively scale synthetic processes from gram-scale to multi-kilogram scale. This individual will be a valued member of the R D team, and will be expected to provide status-updates and research progress based upon the learnings he/she develops from practical experimentation.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Research and Development Work with Principal Investigators and/or other Scientists to plan and prioritize experiments Follow synthetic procedures to safely and reproducibly synthesize, isolate, and purify materials to required yield and purity standards Develop and produce sample quantities of materials for product development and application testing Collect data and create reports/updates to advance research plans in a timely manner Maintain laboratory notebooks and other records as required Research new methods to improve safety, efficiency, reproducibility, and scalability of developmental products Work with researchers and engineers to scale synthetic processes to multi-KG scale Laboratory Safety and Upkeep Participating in PHAs Maintain housekeeping to the established standard which provides a safe and efficient work environment Maintain analytical equipment to reliable performance and visibly pleasing standards Analytical Ability/Problem Solving/Technical skills Experience with handling all lab equipment in a safe and responsible manner Organize/analyze generated data and prepare progress reports in a timely manner Computer knowledge required includes proficiency with Microsoft Office, ChemDraw, Reaxys, PatSnap, etc. Able to use statistical methods to analyze the desired data Level of Supervision Needed Accountable for completing assigned projects safely in a timely manner Responsible for maintaining all necessary documentation in an orderly and legible manner
Requirements:
Education and/or Experience MS/Ph.D Chemistry (organic, polymer, materials science) with 2+ years of laboratory experience in academic setting or 1+ years of laboratory experience in an industrial setting or BS in Chemistry with 5 years of laboratory experience in an industrial setting Strong problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills a must Ability to use analytical equipment is a must (HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, IR, etc.) Ability to organize and clearly communicate technical information is a must Experience in scale chemical synthesis (grams to multi-kilogram scale) preferred Experience and exposure to product development a plus Safety & Essential Functions Adhere to plant/laboratory safety requirements Must be able to handle hazardous chemicals Must be able to use all available or assigned personal protective equipment and tools. Must be able to climb and descend stairs and ladders. Must have good written/verbal communication skills and good documentation practices.
