$10,000 incremental bonus , paid as follows: $1,500 at hire, $2,000 at 90 days, $2,000 at 12 months, and $5,000 at 24 monthsPosition Overview Washington Health Institute (WHI) is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and mission-driven Registered Nurse (RN) to serve in a dual-capacity leadership role spanning clinical operations management (0.4 FTE) and clinical research nursing (0.6 FTE) . This position is ideal for a nurse leader who thrives at the intersection of patient care, team leadership, quality improvement, and research excellence.
Reporting to the Medical Director or designee, the RN will provide clinical leadership within WHI's ambulatory care environment, supporting internal medicine, infectious disease, and primary care services while also contributing to the execution of clinical research studies. The role requires strong operational judgment, excellent communication skills, regulatory awareness, and the ability to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced outpatient setting.
The successful candidate will oversee key clinical workflows, support staff development, advance care management and quality initiatives, and ensure the compliant and efficient conduct of research activities. This individual will play a critical role in integrating research operations into routine clinical care while maintaining high standards of patient safety, service excellence, and organizational accountability. Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Leadership and Operations Provide day-to-day nursing leadership in support of WHI's clinical and operational priorities. Supervise and support clinical support staff to promote efficient patient throughput, accountability, and excellence in care delivery. Oversee clinical staffing schedules, workflow coordination, and resource utilization to ensure appropriate coverage and continuity of operations. Lead orientation, training, cross-training, and competency validation of clinical support staff in accordance with organizational policy. Serve as a subject matter expert in electronic clinical documentation and patient communication workflows within eClinicalWorks . Collaborate with the Practice Manager and Medical Director to strengthen clinical operations, improve workflows, and implement best practices. Promote a collaborative, professional, and high-performing work environment through coaching, mentoring, and clear expectations. Complete performance evaluations in a timely and thorough manner. Direct Nursing Practice Maintain active licensure as a Registered Nurse in Washington, DC. Provide direct patient care as needed in support of clinic operations, including during staffing shortages or periods of increased demand. Conduct nursing assessments, patient education, medication administration, routine clinical procedures, and care coordination activities. Support the development and execution of individualized care plans for patients with chronic and complex health needs. Ensure patients receive appropriate teaching, follow-up, and continuity of care across services. Care Management and Patient Coordination Lead WHI's care management functions, including Chronic Care Management, Transitional Care Management, and Medicare Annual Wellness Visits . Identify patients requiring enhanced care coordination and develop or oversee individualized care plans. Support care transitions, referral management, lab tracking, medication prior authorizations, and communication with external providers. Advance patient engagement and service excellence through organized, patient-centered care processes and proactive follow-up. Quality, Compliance, and Risk Management Support implementation and oversight of clinical policies, standard operating procedures, and quality improvement initiatives. Monitor clinical workflows and identify operational or compliance gaps that may affect patient safety, regulatory readiness, or service quality. Collaborate with leadership on quality reporting, audit preparation, performance improvement activities, and accreditation readiness. Maintain strong working knowledge of PCMH , infection prevention standards, OSHA requirements, and ambulatory care regulatory expectations. Address routine patient concerns and operational issues in a timely, professional, and solutions-oriented manner. Clinical Research Responsibilities Support the conduct of clinical research studies in accordance with approved protocols, sponsor requirements, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), IRB standards, and applicable regulations. Screen, recruit, consent, and retain eligible research participants. Coordinate and conduct study visits, including protocol-specific clinical procedures, participant education, specimen collection and handling, medication administration, and follow-up. Maintain accurate, timely, and complete source documentation, study records, and case report documentation. Ensure adherence to protocol requirements, participant safety standards, adverse event reporting timelines, and data quality expectations. Coordinate effectively with investigators, study sponsors, CROs, monitors, laboratories, and internal WHI teams. Support study start-up, site initiation, monitoring visits, audits, regulatory documentation, and study close-out activities. Assist in integrating research workflows into routine clinical operations while minimizing disruption to patient care. Contribute to participant recruitment, retention, and study execution strategies that support the growth and quality of WHI's research program. Qualifications Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington, DC . Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required ; experience in ambulatory care, primary care, internal medicine, infectious disease, or outpatient specialty practice strongly preferred. Prior supervisory, charge nurse, care coordination, or clinical leadership experience preferred. Demonstrated experience supporting patients with chronic and complex care needs. Experience with eClinicalWorks strongly preferred. Prior experience in clinical research strongly preferred, including participant coordination, informed consent, protocol implementation, and study documentation. Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) , human subjects protection, and regulatory requirements governing clinical research strongly preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of professionalism, confidentiality, and patient safety. Commitment to teamwork, accountability, operational excellence, and compassionate service. Spanish language proficiency is a plus. Work Environment and Expectations This is a fully in-person position based in Washington, DC ; remote work is not available for this role.
