DESCRIPTION
The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest departments within the School of Medicine with approximately 171 Faculty, 50 postdoctoral fellows (both MDs and PhDs) along with over 300 support staff (not including hospital staff). In addition, the Department has 57 clinical residents and fellows distributed across the Divisions. The missions of research, education and patient care are intertwined, and are integral to the goals of the department. The Department has undergone significant growth in recent years with a consolidated budget of approximately $106 million including sponsored projects expenditures of approximately $54 million and clinical revenue of over $ 52 million. This expansion of the Department'sresearch and clinical portfolio is expected to continue in the next few years. The Department's 16 divisions include Academic General Pediatrics, Child Development & Community Health; Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology; Cardiology; Environmental Science and Health; Emergency Medicine; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology; Genetics; Genome Information Sciences; Hospital Medicine; Host-Microbe Systems and Therapeutics; Infectious Diseases; Neonatology; Nephrology; and Respiratory Medicine. In 2001, physicians and leadership of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Rady Children's, and Children's Specialists of San Diego (CSSD) unified pediatric patient care, research, education and community service programs, creating a university-affiliated children'shealth system to serve the region. Over the past two decades, an extensive list of joint programs has developed, with many physicians and researchers playing a role at both institutions. This affiliation has consolidated the clinical, teaching, research and public service programs of the UCSD School of Medicine's Department of Pediatrics with San Diego's only health care system dedicated to the health and well-being of children. In 2009, this partnership wasfurthered by the creation of Rady Children's Specialists of San Diego, a Medical Foundation, and is now recognized as having global leaders in research, technology, translational medicine, education and clinical excellence. The Division of Environmental Science & Health is involved in four major areas: 1) providing clinical services to patients with birth defects and developmental disabilities, 2) providing public health services in counseling patients, providers and education to the public aboutpregnancy and lactation exposures and their impact on child development and health, 3) a teaching program that includes undergraduate students, graduate students in epidemiology, medical students, and post
  • doctoral students, pediatrics, epidemiology, health behavior,global health, pharmacy, and other specialties; and 4) conducting clinical research to better understand the causes, prevention and treatment of birth defects and developmental disabilities.
Research programs and projects within the Division involve federal, state and industrysponsored grants and contracts totaling over $60 million. These encompass national and international studies that require complex interrelated infrastructure and shared resources both within the Division and with collaborators and subcontractors outside the Division. Under the general supervision of the Research Manager, the incumbent directly supervises and manages a team of Research Data Specialists, as well as a team of Research Data Assistants, for the OTIS MotherToBaby Pregnancy Studies. The OTIS Research Center is located within the Department of Pediatrics, Center for Better Beginnings at UCSD. The OTIS Research Center conducts multiple federal and industry sponsored longitudinal observational cohort studies focused on pregnancy outcomes in women exposed and unexposed to specific chronic diseases, medications and/or vaccines. The studies recruit and follow several thousand study participants across the US and Canada. The incumbent is responsible for hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising a staff of Research Data Assistants who track and manage medical record requests, and Research Data Specialists who review and abstract medical records, clean study data as needed, conductquality control and validate maternal interviews, validate medical record abstraction, and perform other medical record review and data collection tasks. The incumbent is responsible for managing medical record requesting, quality control / validation of maternal interview data,and medical record abstraction and validation, assigning and directing work to the study team; monitoring progress, goals, and objectives of the team; ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures, data entry and record-keeping protocols, and quality control ofabstraction and data cleaning tasks. The incumbent creates short and long-term projections for the team, delegates work, as well as error log report generation and identification training needs based on these reports, and creates and updates study manuals or oversees updatesto these guides. Participates in identification, testing, and implementation of new technologies to create efficiencies, and work with database programmers to identify problems and discuss solutions for improvement. The incumbent may participate in other study activities,or oversees staff participating in other study activities, such as socio-economic scoring (SES), validation of maternal interview data collection and data-entry, processing of payment for medical records, collaborating and creating new forms, or other activities as needed oras requested by the Research Manager. Supervises staff responsible for working with departments, staff, patients and families in using clinical research techniques. May assume full responsibility for the research in delegated studies. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by whichto attain them. Supervises daily operations, and performance requirements. Has full oversight for staffing, performance management, and programmatic workflow of project. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training. Broad knowledge of clinical or laboratory research and clinical research philosophy. Demonstrated ability to translate clinical research philosophy into business best practices in a trial setting. Demonstrated project management skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize projects and meet the demands of a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Adaptable to quickly changing priorities. Demonstrated experience managing people with a wide range of educational backgrounds and skills.
