Job description This opportunity is located within our Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company business, a global leader of mission-critical hardware and systems solutions including precision energetics systems and innovative explosive solutions. to learn more. Job Description Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense is currently seeking a talented Environmental Specialist in our Simsbury, CT facility, reporting to the Manager of Safety & Regulatory Compliance. The Environmental Specialist is a critical member of the greater EH&S team and will be responsible for managing the EBAD hazardous waste program.
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in the environmental, health and safety, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, or relevant military experience
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA, EPA, CTDEEP, DoD, DSS, DHS and other Federal, State, and local regulations with respect to environmental protection.
  • Must have excellent people skills and demonstrated ability to motivate a workforce and train in a Lean Manufacturing environment.
  • Must be fluent in English, and able to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
  • Innovative and creative approaches and solutions to problems are important. General Responsibilities (but not limited to):
  • Understanding of EPA Regulations and applicable State Regulations and
EBAD EHS
policies
  • Develop a high-level of state and federal regulatory expertise ensuring compliance needs met (RCRA, DOT, OSHA and CTDEEP).
  • Manage all aspects of the Hazardous Waste Program including the Contingency Plan.
  • Preparation of hazardous, chemical, and biological waste for shipment and disposal, including creation of all federal/state waste documents and managing records.
  • Safe handling of hazardous waste containers onsite, as well as loading/unloading waste from vehicles.
  • Complete all required manifest paperwork and documentation accurately.
  • Conduct safety equipment and hazardous waste inspections.
  • Occasionally perform and document Environmental Health and Safety audits.
  • Observe EHS regulations, wears all required safety equipment, encourages safe working practices, corrects obvious hazards immediately or reports them to the proper personnel.
  • Promote incident prevention for the benefit of employees and visitors.
  • Conduct spill response measures, including assessment of the spills and cleanup efforts.
  • Maintain relevant EHS logs and documentation, conduct sampling and prepare applicable EHS reports, as necessary.
  • Assist in the compliance of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ability to collaborate with employees to achieve cultural change in the face of potential resistance.
  • Maintain positive and initiative-taking relations with managers and employees, as well as our customers and regulatory agencies.
  • Perform other work-related tasks as required and assigned.
  • Comply with all Company and EHS procedures and policies. Facility Specific Responsibilities (but not limited to):
  • Walk the manufacturing floor on a regular basis to establish EHS presence, ensure compliance with hazardous waste regulations and provide support. Implement, and manage EHS Programs, Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform facility Environmental inspections, sampling, and reporting.
  • Have knowledge and enforce compliance of regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, EPA, DoD, DHS, etc.), including company EHS policies and procedures.
  • Ability to oversee Hazardous Waste Storage area and ensure regulatory agency compliance i.e., labeling, containment, proper disposal, documentation, etc.
  • Assist in emergency response.
  • Powered Industrial Truck trained.
