Job Description
Job Description Summary The A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland serves as the catalyst for high-quality research, innovation, and learning, preparing our students to create innovations that will address the 21st century Grand Challenges (e.g., energy, environment, security, and human health) and improve the human condition. The Clark School is dedicated to leading and transforming the engineering discipline and profession, to accelerating entrepreneurship, and to transforming research and learning activities into new innovations that benefit millions. The Maryland Transportation Institute (MTI), housed within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the A. James Clark School of Engineering, is a catalyst for high-caliber transportation and disaster resilience research, education and technology transfer. MTI supports the mission of improving quality of life and economic development in Maryland and beyond. The Grants Specialist will report to the Associate Director for Finance and Research Services and will be responsible for the research and finance functions for MTI as well as provide assistance as needed as part of the CEE research team. This position plays an instrumental role in enabling MTI's continued growth, thereby allowing it to remain one of the technical leaders and innovators in transportation. Job duties entail managing sponsored research administration for MTI; handling all pre-award activities, including but not limited to preparing budget and justification, ensuring disclosures and compliance requirements are met, compiling all internal and external proposal materials, working with ORA and PI to successfully complete submission; management of post-award activities, including but not limited to preparing monthly statements and required sponsor reports, reviewing expenses for compliance with federal and state regulations and university policies, monitoring cost share, and completing effort certification. The incumbent will work with Associate Director for Finance and Research Services to resolve issues; provide excellent customer service to faculty and students; assist and serve as back-up to CEE finance team as requested; and complete other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.Minimum Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.Experience:
Three (3) years of professional grants, finance, or accounting experience.Other:
Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of grants related policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.Additional Job Details Preferred:
Experience using enterprise financial and HR systems such as Workday and/or research administration tools (e.g., Kuali, PeopleSoft, or similar). Experience managing pre- and/or post-award grant activities in a higher education or research environment, preferably within University System of Maryland institutions.Required Application Materials:
