Job Description

Are you passionate about the environment and ready to help with the Department of Public Works environmental initiatives? We are looking for a Resources Recovery Specialist who will lead and support programs aimed at reducing waste, conserving resources, and maximizing reuse efforts. This position will provide support in the operation of the d epartments SafeChem Program. The responsibilities for the SafeChem (Household Hazardous Waste) program will include planning, scheduling and staffing weekly and Saturday collections once a month. Requires classifying and properly packing household chemicals brought to SafeChem service centers. Will be responsible for coordinating hazardous material shipments with vendors, staffing, site safety, general housekeeping, tracking participation and preparing annual reports. The successful candidate will have familiarity in hazardous waste with a strong desire to provide professional and courteous customer service. Must be a self-starter, computer literate and in possession of a valid State of Michigan driver's license with a good driving record. Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources Management, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Conservation or a related area. Must have successful work experience or demonstrated ability in working with volunteers, local units of government, community groups or other organizations. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Must know the appropriate identification, storage, and disposal of hazardous household waste, resource recovery, reuse, waste reduction. Computer literacy essential. Desire an individual with experience in program planning, chemistry and/or hazardous materials management.
