Lab Coordinator for the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences The University of Southern Mississippi is currently accepting applications for the position of Lab Coordinator for the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences. Job Summary The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day management and supervision of General Biology and Human Anatomy & Physiology teaching laboratory programs. The position also ensures the maintenance of a safe, organized, and effective laboratory environment. This position is a full-time, twelve (12) month, renewable, non-tenure-track staff position within the School of Biological, Environmental, and Earth Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Supervises teaching assistants in biology laboratory courses (BSC 103L, 104L, 107L, 110L, 111L, 250L, 251L), including promoting and enforcing laboratory safety protocols for both teaching assistants and students. Teaches one lecture section as needed, which may include courses such as BSC 103, 104, 107, 110, 111, 250, and 251. Manages key academic and administrative responsibilities, including enrollment oversight, addressing honor code violations, coordinating ADA accommodations, and providing student advisement as needed. Oversees the Biology Tutorial Center, including scheduling and supervising tutors, ensuring proper maintenance, and generating and maintaining required reports. Designs, develops, and evaluates educational materials for laboratory courses, including quizzes and examinations, and conducts weekly lab staff meetings to coordinate instructional activities and logistics between lab and lecture components. Assists in maintaining laboratory facilities, equipment, instrumentation, and chemical inventory to support instructional needs. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited college or university in biological science or a related field. Must have eighteen (18) credit hours in biology. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, search engines, and web-based applications to support research, data analysis, and documentation. Ability to safely operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including autoclaves, pH meters, balances, microcentrifuges, microscopes, and heating/stirring devices. Knowledge of general laboratory procedures, tools, and supplies, including proper handling, calibration, and upkeep of instrumentation. Proficiency in the Canvas Learning Management System for course delivery, communication, and student assessment. Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver instruction and support student learning outcomes. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral from an accredited college or university in biological science or a related field. One (1) year of experience in managing a laboratory environment. Two (2) years of experience in teaching undergraduate biology laboratories. One (1) year of experience in course development and instructional design, including participation in teaching-related workshops or conferences.
