Water Instrumentation Specialist Recruitment # 26-5053-001 Date Opened 3/16/2026 09:00:00 AM Close Date 4/12/2026 11:59:00 PM Salary $75,774.40 - $101,899.20 per year Department Water Job Type Noncompetitive Responsibilities The Water Instrumentation Specialist performs water and lime testing along with other laboratory procedures and records and interprets the results necessary for proper operation of the well fields and treatment plants in compliance with Federal and State regulations. By utilizing complex laboratory instruments such as Gas Chromatograph (GC), Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Atomic Absorption (AA), Flow Injection Analyzer (FIA), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), and Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), the incumbent determines metal contents/levels in water samples. Instrumentation Specialists must possess thorough knowledge of the laboratory equipment and its major and minor components and be able to set-up, tear-down, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs of equipment. Through the use of personal computers and operating systems, must be able to manipulate databases, spreadsheets, graphic programs and word processing. Incumbent must possess functioning knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in order to facilitate data, searches and quality control programs. Minimum Qualifications Must meet one of the following: Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or related discipline WITH three (3) years of experience as a Water Bacteriologist Chemist or equivalent experience AND one year of experience on complex laboratory equipment such as but not limited to:
GF/AA, ICP, TOC
FIA, GC, IC, HPLC, LC/MS/MS and GC/MS; OR Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or related discipline AND three (3) years of experience on complex laboratory equipment such as but not limited to:
GF/AA, ICP, TOC
FIA, GC, IC, HPLC, LC/MS/MS and GC/MS. Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region. Certifications The following criteria
IS REQUIRED
Within two (2) years of appointment, must obtain an Ohio EPA Water Supply Class II Certificate or an Operator in Training Class II certification according to EPA eligibility rules. Within four (4) years of appointment, must obtain an Ohio EPA Water Supply Class III Certificate according to Ohio EPA eligibility rules. License Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain as a condition of continued employment. Background Check A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position. Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
