The Emergency Management Department is excited to hire a part-time benefitted and grant-funded Preparedness Specialist to join their team. The purpose of this position is to assist in the coordination of preparedness, planning, response, recovery, and mitigation of natural disasters, man-made disasters, technological hazards, acts of terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, or wartime events that may affect York County. Initially this position will assist with: Social media initiatives focused on community and individual preparedness, including the analysis of social media platforms for situational awareness. Updating and maintaining the department website Development of public education initiatives and materials to effectively inform communities about disaster risks and preparedness strategies. Presentation of educational programs via community outreach to schools, organizations, church groups, scouts, and similar entities. Work Schedule:

Normal business hours between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm; however, schedule is relatively flexible. The part-time schedule is for 29 hours weekly, totaling 58 hours biweekly.

Conferences Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinates preparedness, planning, response, recovery, and mitigation of natural disasters, man-made disasters, technological hazards, acts of terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, wartime events, or planned activities with various local, state, and federal government, and non-governmental agencies. Prepares for and may respond to emergencies involving evacuations, shelter operations, searches, heavy or technical rescue, underwater rescue and recovery, hazardous materials releases, clandestine drug laboratories, etc. providing coordination and support of on-scene operations. Travels to sites of emergencies and training sites using a county vehicle. Maintains general emergency response vehicles, trailers, and equipment. Performs related work as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in emergency management or related discipline. Two (2) years of emergency management or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Certifications and Licenses:

South Carolina Certified Emergency Manager Certification preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
