Environmental Resources Conservation Planner - Waterville, WA

Have a passion for natural resources, agriculture, and the environment? Work alongside USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service specialists to provide conservation and technical assistance to landowners throughout Washington to protect natural resources while maintaining agricultural viability. This includes dairy and livestock nutrient management planning, soil health, forestry management, irrigation water management, and conservation/farm planning.

Position Objectives :

This full-time position will address on-farm natural resource issues by providing direct one-on-one technical assistance to private landowners and voluntary participants within the USDA technical assistant programs. This position entails working closely with other agencies and other staff within the Natural Resources team. The Resource Conservation Planner will work on conservation plans and provide educational and outreach information to local producers, agencies, partners, and the community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Follow the 7-step Conservation Planning process to write nutrient management, noxious weed, soil, water, and forestry management plans. Participate in education and outreach activities with other agencies for landowners and the community, such as field demonstrations, presentations, workshops, etc. Develop irrigation water management plans, install soil moisture monitoring equipment, and collect and record data. Utilize ArcGIS and Web Soil Survey to create resource maps and informational information alongside plans. Leading and working with field crews, contractors, and agency personnel in performing deep soil sampling and other soil health activities for landowners. Complete regular educational training through in-class, on-the-job, and online training courses when required. Know and comply with NRCS Technical Field Guides. Take photos onsite and assist with general office duties.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and a solid background in agricultural operations, practices, and systems such as irrigation, soil and water conservation principles, and water quality concerns. High degree of confidentiality and diplomacy Ability to maintain a professional work ethic while completing all duties assigned in a timely, courteous, and professional manner. High level of collaboration with partners is expected, including ag professionals, landowners, and the community. Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders. Self-motivated and able to work independently and in groups. Fluency in the English language. Ability to walk long distances in all types of terrain with possible exposure to inclement weather; lift and carry equipment and materials. Must have computer skills using Microsoft Office; a basic knowledge of GIS software and other mapping tools as they become available. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and have a valid Washington State driver's license. Knowledge of Conservation Districts and/or Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is a plus, along with other ag-related fields of study, instruction, or job experience.
