This entry-level role offers hands-on field experience, paid training, and a clear career path into engineering and project management positions within the environmental industry. Responsibilities Perform third-party EPA air emissions testing and monitoring at industrial and manufacturing client sites. Transport testing equipment to job sites using company vehicles and ensure safe handling of all equipment. Set up and break down air emissions testing equipment at various locations, including elevated work areas. Record accurate test data and collect environmental samples in accordance with established procedures. Calibrate testing equipment to ensure reliable and compliant measurements. Assist engineers with air quality testing procedures and related field activities. Follow and promote environmental, health, and safety protocols at all times while on site and in the warehouse. Organize, load, and secure testing equipment and materials in vehicles in preparation for upcoming jobs. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of testing equipment to keep it in proper working condition. Use company-provided resources to study for and obtain certifications for EPA Test Methods 1-5. Work collaboratively as part of a field team ranging from small groups to larger crews, depending on project size. Support warehouse operations on non-field days, including laying out and preparing testing equipment, loading vehicles, cleaning, and performing general maintenance tasks. Essential Skills Minimum of a high school diploma. 1+ year of experience in a field testing, maintenance, industrial, construction, landscaping, or other hands-on role is preferred. Comfort working at heights of up to 100-400 feet above ground level. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds safely and repeatedly as needed. Mechanical aptitude and ability to work with tools and technical equipment. Willingness to obtain OSHA 10-hour safety certification with company-provided training. Ability to follow detailed environmental, health, and safety procedures. Strong teamwork skills and ability to work effectively in field crews of varying sizes. Reliable data recording and attention to detail when collecting samples and documenting test results. Valid driving capability suitable for operating company vehicles to and from job sites, as required for equipment transport. Additional Skills & Qualifications B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field is preferred. Previous experience in a field-based or hands-on position such as industrial, construction, maintenance, or environmental work. Interest in building a career in the environmental industry, with a defined career path from Test Technician to senior leadership roles. Willingness to study for and obtain certifications for EPA Test Methods 1-5 using company resources. Ability to adapt to varying work schedules, including occasional weekends and changing travel demands. Strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to work long days when project demands require it. Work Environment This role is primarily field-based at industrial sites such as power plants, steel mills, refineries, and manufacturing facilities. Environmental Technicians frequently work at heights between 100 and 400 feet above ground level, where temperatures are typically lower and winds are higher, so wearing extra layers is important. Field days generally range from 8 to 10+ hours, while warehouse days are typically 8 hours. Teamwork is central to the role, and technicians always work as part of a crew, with team sizes varying from about 3 to as many as 20 people depending on the project. The typical attire includes jeans, a long-sleeve T-shirt, boots (non-steel toe are acceptable), and appropriate outerwear such as a coat and stocking cap during colder months. Travel varies from week to week, with some jobs lasting a single day and others extending through an entire workweek; occasional weekend work may be required, generally not more than once a month. When not in the field, technicians work in the warehouse or home office environment preparing testing equipment, loading vehicles, cleaning, and performing general maintenance tasks. Work volume can fluctuate due to weather and seasonality; severe rain, sleet, snow, or ice may delay field jobs, but technicians typically continue working in the warehouse or office during these periods. During larger projects, technicians may work extended hours and up to approximately 60 hours per week when combining on-site work and paid travel time. The company provides OSHA 10-hour certification training at no cost and offers a strong pathway to permanent employment with comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, retirement plan with company match, paid time off, and paid holidays for permanent employees, along with a clear advancement path from Test Technician through engineering, team lead, project management, and director-level roles.
