Job Description

Summary This internship is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in infection prevention. Infection Preventionists (IPs) are specially trained healthcare professionals dedicated to preventing the spread of infections and promoting patient and staff safety across healthcare settings. The Infection Prevention Intern works under the direction of an Infection Preventionist and supports infection prevention and control (IPC) practices throughout the organization. The intern collaborates closely with Infection Preventionists, Epidemiologists, and Data Coordinators, and may also partner with Safety Coordinators, Quality Specialists, Microbiology Laboratory Specialists, Environmental Services staff, and facility leaders. Key responsibilities may include assisting with the management of transmission-based precautions; supporting patient and staff education initiatives; participating in environment of care rounds and follow-up activities; contributing to process improvement efforts; conducting hospital-acquired infection surveillance; and supporting mandatory data reporting to the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and applicable reimbursement programs. The role requires strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, and effective problem-solving skills. Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, while maintaining strict confidentiality of sensitive data and information. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and demonstrated skills in data collection and entry are essential. Qualified candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit a cover letter, resume, and letter of recommendation. Applicants must be current undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in health science, healthcare delivery, public health, or a related field. Specific educational focuses, licenses, or certifications may be preferred depending on the hosting department. The internship is scheduled Monday through Friday during normal business hours, with some flexibility available, and is structured for up to 32 hours per week. Additional qualifications may vary by department.
