Role Description This full-time, on-site Principal Engineering Geologist role is based in Carlsbad, CA. The Principal Engineering Geologist will lead and oversee site investigations, including planning and executing field work such as subsurface exploration, mapping, preliminary investigations, grading, logging, and sampling. Daily responsibilities include interpreting geological and geotechnical data, developing subsurface models, and preparing technical reports, recommendations, and design parameters for foundations, slopes, and earthwork. The role involves coordinating with project managers, engineers, clients, and regulatory agencies, as well as mentoring and guiding junior staff in field practices, data interpretation, and report writing. The Principal Engineering Geologist will also support project scoping, proposal preparation, quality control, and help ensure adherence to safety, industry standards, and company procedures. Qualifications Strong expertise in Engineering Geology, including geologic mapping, hazard evaluation, and interpretation of subsurface conditions. Proficiency in Geotechnical Engineering applications, including foundation recommendations, slope stability considerations, and earthwork evaluation. Demonstrated experience with Site Investigation and Field Work, including planning and supervising drilling, test pits, sampling, and in-situ testing. Hands-on skills in logging of borings, test pits, and other subsurface data, with accurate documentation and classification. Professional licensure as a Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG) in California, or eligibility to obtain in a reasonable timeframe. Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related field; a master's degree is preferred. Substantial experience in applied engineering geology for land development, transportation, or infrastructure projects, including project leadership responsibilities. Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, concise reports and present findings to clients and agencies. Proficiency with common geotechnical and geology software, and familiarity with relevant building codes and local regulatory requirements.
