This position directly supports the Office of Strategic Initiatives and works closely with the Uranium Mine Reclamation Coordinator in advancing the New Mexico Environment Department's (NMED) strategic initiative to foster environmentally conscientious economic growth as well as protecting human health. The Uranium Mine Reclamation Engineer will serve to provide technical expertise on cleanup projects, liaise between the contracted, in the field engineering firms and the agency, present scenario modeling, calculate and report on operational analytics, and align activities with New Mexico's climate and environmental goals. The position conducts research, collects and analyzes data of a moderate to complex nature representing a significant portion of the reclamation projects. The position reports on projects to the coordinator and provides estimates/projections and recommendations which are used on several projects of moderate scope with complex features. How does it get done? Technical review of all reports related to mine site cleanup: Health and Safety Plans, Sampling Analysis Plans, Radiological Surveys, Cultural Resource Surveys, and/or Biological Surveys Strong internal communication with financial, technical, and administrative staff. Strong external communication with partner agencies, contractors, subcontractors, and regulators Use of radiological measurement equipment, such as Model 19, NaI Detectors, Model 194, Pancake Detectors, Global Positioning System (GPS) systems in field settings. Connecting data from field devices to centralized databases, such as ArcGIS Online platforms Critical and creative thinking, as well as analytical reasoning for problem solving in a fast-paced environment Reliability, responsibility, and persistence for ensuring that tasks are completed fully and accurately Project tracking of internal and contractor deliverables, tasks, meeting notes, schedules, and budgets Contract implementation may be required periodically Applies a geological understanding within the mine cleanup framework Who are the customers? New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Ideal Candidate New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Minimum Qualification Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline and three (3) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the
NMBLPEPS
as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions Work is primarily performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
