Job Description

Floodplain & Dam EngineerAbout the Company My client is a multidisciplinary civil and water resources engineering firm that supports a diverse mix of municipal, state, federal, and private‑sector projects. Their portfolio ranges from major mixed‑use developments and data center campuses to community‑scale infrastructure and environmental projects. The team works closely with local jurisdictions and agencies such as USACE, NAVFAC, GSA, DHS, NIH, and others.

The company has a dedicated Water Resources group specializing in stormwater management, floodplain analysis and permitting, dam breach modeling, inspections, and long‑term system maintenance.

The OpportunityMy client is seeking a Floodplain and Dam Engineer / Modeler to join their growing Water Resources team in Chantilly, VA.This role offers hands‑on involvement in floodplain modeling, floodplain permitting, dam safety studies, H&H modeling, and design of floodplain and dam-related infrastructure. The position provides excellent opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and exposure to a wide breadth of water resources services, including stormwater design and regulatory permitting.

Key Technical ResponsibilitiesDevelop hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) models using GIS, survey data, and topographic informationAnalyze, calibrate, and troubleshoot hydraulic modelsPrepare floodplain studies, CLOMR/LOMR submissions, and related permitting packagesComplete dam breach inundation studies, hazard classification assessments, and failure mode analysesProduce floodplain and dam breach mappingPrepare Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and support emergency drill materialsAssist with design of floodplain crossings and dam rehabilitation projectsGeneral Job DutiesDevelop and manage HEC‑RAS models (1D and, ideally, 2D)Prepare state and local permit applicationsConduct site visits for floodplain and dam inspectionsWrite technical reports and documentationResearch codes, regulations, and engineering standardsCoordinate with regulators and review agencies to resolve commentsManage multiple projects and deadlinesCollaborate effectively with internal team membersOther engineering duties as requiredRequired QualificationsMinimum 2+ years of experience with HEC‑RAS modelingBachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related disciplineStrong analytical, mathematical, and problem‑solving skillsExcellent written and verbal communicationHigh attention to detail and strong quality control mindsetExperience with ArcMap or similar GIS softwarePreferred QualificationsEngineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certificationProfessional Engineer (PE) licenseCertified Floodplain Manager (CFM)Experience with HEC‑RAS 2DProficiency in AutoCADWhy Join This Team?
