Position Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) provides information for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses. Performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill that is commensurate with the individual's training, experience, and technical abilities. Primary Position Responsibilities 1. Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. 2. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. 3. Adheres to the laboratory's Quality Control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. 4. Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. 5. Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, or director. 6. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Qualifications Minimum Education:
Required:
Bachelor's Degree in chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution with related training in a hospital laboratory setting. Foreign graduates require equivalency evaluation documentation.
Minimum Years of Experience:
Required:
Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program or completion of a U.S. Military Laboratory Specialist Course.
Preferred:
At least one year's experience in a clinical laboratory is preferred but not necessary.

License, Registry or Certification:
Required:
ASCP or AMT registry eligible (defined as degree plus clinical laboratory experience)
