Job Description
Sign On Bonus Eligible! Working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in the Chemistry division is a fast-paced and highly specialized role. Our laboratory stands out for performing unique tests such as liquid chromatography for anti-rejection drugs, A1C testing, allergen testing, electrophoresis, protein analysis, and breath tests-services not offered elsewhere in the system. MLS professionals in our laboratory are dedicated to patient testing, processing an exceptionally high volume of specimens, with approximately 10,000 tubes handled daily. Our laboratory is equipped with Beckman Coulter systems for general and immunoassay testing as well as
SCIEX LC-MS/MS
for immunosuppressant drug testing - operating within a highly automated yet diverse testing environment. Our laboratory fosters a strong team dynamic, with experienced MLS professionals mentoring new staff and leadership encouraging innovation and continuous improvement in a LEAN-focused workplace.GENERAL SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunological, microscopic, and/or bacteriological tests procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems, for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, or treatment of disease. The Medical Laboratory Scientist is qualified to perform duties described here, and, in a given job situation may or may not perform all of the duties as actual duties will pertain to the specific assignment. 2. Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problems, including: a) Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release. b) Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states. c) Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results. 3. Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments and/or laboratory information systems. Following successful completion of competency testing may perform processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision. 4. Complies with established departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control. Maintains confidentiality of patient information. 5. Participates in various quality assessment and improvement activities including, proficiency testing, gathering data for quality assurance monitors, developing and adhering to safe work practices, participating in quality improvement committees, and successfully completes regular competency assessments. Maintains the laboratory and procedures in inspection ready condition.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1. Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratory discipline position and meet the education Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website at (ascp.org); or possesses a categorical scientist level certification as aBB, C, CG, CT, M, MB
; or has met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications. 2. Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting. 3. Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions are required.Similar jobs in Detroit, MI
