Medical Laboratory Scientist - Clinical Immunology Lifespan United States, Rhode Island, Providence 164 Summit Avenue (Show on map) May 14, 2026 Summary Under the general supervision of a Specialist, Manager, or Director, this role performs complex clinical laboratory testing within one or more sections of the Pathology Department. The position requires advanced professional knowledge to accurately read, interpret, and analyze test results-including abnormal or atypical findings. Key responsibilities include equipment calibration, execution and interpretation of complex testing and quality control (QC) results, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment. Instill Trust & Value Differences Patient & Community Focus & Collaboration Key Responsibilities Laboratory Operations Receive specimens, verify patient identification, and confirm accuracy of physician orders and labeling. Prevent specimen contamination through proper handling procedures. Prepare and validate solutions, reagents, and stains in accordance with standard formulas and procedures. Ensure proper labeling, dating, and documentation of reagents and QC materials. Testing & Analysis Perform complex clinical laboratory tests using methodologies such as: EIA, IFA, Chemiluminescence, RIA Electrophoresis, Immunoassay, Colorimetry Monitor testing procedures, parameters, and results. Interpret and analyze clinical significance of test results. Collaborate with team members on unusual findings and escalate as needed. Accurately record and report results to physicians or regulatory agencies as required. Quality Control & Improvement Conduct quality control checks on equipment and reagents. Identify and troubleshoot issues using QC data. Participate in quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives. Assist in developing and validating new tests and procedures. Equipment & Maintenance Set up, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot malfunctions and perform preventive maintenance. Coordinate with manufacturers when necessary. Maintain cleanliness of laboratory spaces and equipment. Training & Support Assist in training and mentoring students, residents, and new employees. Support onboarding within assigned laboratory sections. Inventory & Compliance Maintain laboratory inventory and ensure adequate supply levels. Comply with all QA, safety, infection control, and HIPAA regulations. Additional Duties Maintain Rhode Island CLS license and required continuing education (minimum 15 hours/year). Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science field (e.g., Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry), OR equivalent education and experience per CLIA standards. Certifications National certification (ASCP or equivalent) in relevant disciplines OR Eligibility for certification with completion of an accredited clinical training program OR Qualification as a technologist under CLIA standards Experience Minimum of 1 year clinical laboratory experience. Skills & Abilities Proficiency in laboratory instrumentation and testing procedures. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Ability to interpret complex clinical data accurately. Physical and visual dexterity required for laboratory testing. Ability to stand for extended periods and perform bench work. Cultural competency and patient-centered care awareness. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Exposure to: Infectious materials Chemical hazards Laboratory odors and toxins Frequent visual concentration when examining specimens.
