Job Description

Hiring Department TV Station Job Description KOMU 8 News is looking for an authentic, collaborative and audience-focused morning meteorologist to join our award-winning weather team. KOMU 8 in Columbia, Missouri, is unlike any other television station in the country. As the NBC affiliate owned by the Missouri School of Journalism, we have a dual mission: serving mid-Missouri while helping educate the next generation of journalists. Every day you'll work alongside experienced professionals and talented students in one of the nation's premier teaching newsrooms. We're looking for a meteorologist who loves forecasting, thrives during severe weather, and enjoys connecting with viewers on-air, online, and in the community. Mid-Missouri gets all four seasons-from winter storms to extreme heat-you'll have the opportunity help keep viewers safe all year long. Your Responsibilities Prepare and deliver accurate, compelling weather forecasts across multiple morning newscasts Lead coverage during severe weather and other high-impact weather events, including providing urgent updates that interrupt regular programming when necessary Create weather content for broadcast, digital, streaming, and social media platforms Research, write, and produce enterprise weather stories that will be part of weather specials throughout the year Use the latest forecasting technology Represent KOMU 8 at community events, school visits, public appearances, and station promotions Maintain an active social media presence that engages viewers before, during, and after weather events Collaborate with our team of meteorologists, reporters, producers, and newsroom leaders Work alongside and mentor meteorology and journalism students through coaching, critiques, and hands-on newsroom training Be available to work extended hours and adjust schedules as needed during severe weather and major breaking weather events Be willing to do live reports during major weather events and/or station sponsored events Perform other duties as assigned Weather is one of the most important commitments we make to our viewers. Our audience relies on KOMU 8 during severe weather and for everyday forecasts. You'll join an experienced, collaborative weather team with the tools and support needed to produce award-winning coverage while growing your career. Openings on our weather team are rare. Shift 2am•10am Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary Preferred Qualifications 1-2 years of on-air forecasting experience (more experienced candidates are encouraged to apply) Demonstrates strong forecasting and communication skills Has excellent storytelling and live presentation abilities Is comfortable creating content across television, digital, and social platforms Values teamwork, professionalism, and continuous learning Is excited about helping train and mentor aspiring journalists and meteorologists An AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) or NWA Seal is not required but a bonus!
Anticipated Hiring Range Salary Range:
$40,000•55,000 annually
