Job Description
Every year, millions of people suffer from preventable foodborne illness. StrainTrace is building the next generation of rapid molecular diagnostics to change that. We are a science-driven startup developing ultra-sensitive pathogen detection tools that allow food producers and laboratories to identify contamination faster and with greater resolution.
Our mission is simple:
help ensure that food around the world is safer to eat. We are seeking a Molecular Microbiologist who is passionate about both the science and the public health mission behind it. In this role you will help design and validate next-generation molecular assays and contribute to pathogen characterization studies that translate complex biological signals into clear, actionable diagnostic tools. As an early member of the StrainTrace team, you will have the opportunity to shape the scientific direction of the company while participating in its long-term success through equity. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Support and promote the company's scientific mission and vision. Design and execute experiments involving traditional bacterial culture methods and molecular identification techniques such as PCR. Demonstrate technical expertise in PCR assay development, including primer and probe design, mastermix optimization, and multiplex assay development. Conduct validation and verification studies in compliance with applicable guidelines such as AOAC and ISO 16140, as well as internal standard operating procedures. Document experimental activities in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Documentation Practices. Draft and maintain internal quality documentation including production batch records, quality control records, validation protocols, and standard operating procedures. Prepare and maintain customer-facing documentation such as instructions for use, technical bulletins, certificates of analysis, and labeling materials. Represent the company at scientific and industry conferences through poster presentations or oral presentations. Participate in meetings with key customers and develop an in-depth understanding of customer requirements. Perform quality control testing of manufactured assays to ensure tests meet product specifications and customer requirements prior to release. Provide technical support to customers via phone or email. Perform additional scientific or operational duties as needed to support company growth. Qualifications Education and experience PhD in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field with at least 1 year of relevant experience or Master's degree in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field with 2-4 years of relevant experience or Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, microbiology, or a related field with 4+ years of relevant experience Relevant experience should include: Knowledge of PCR assay design, including primer and probe design, mastermix optimization, and target multiplexing. Hands-on experience performing real-time PCR and interpreting real-time PCR data. Experience working with bacterial culture techniques and aseptic technique, including common foodborne pathogens. Familiarity with regulatory methods for pathogen identification and AOAC validation requirements for microbiological assays. Experience working under Good Laboratory Practices and Good Documentation Practices, ideally in anISO 9001, ISO
13485, orISO 17025
accredited organization. Additional Skills and Attributes Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy. Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative in resolving technical issues and making recommendations. Proficiency with standard office software such as Word and Excel. Project management experience is desirable. Other Information Occasional domestic travel may be required (<10%).
