Please Note Scheduled Hours:
8:00am-4:30azpm Monday-Friday, With Weekends Off Every 4th weekend and holiday rotation are required. Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): Inspects and evaluates laboratory instruments; performs basic mechanical repairs and adjustments to ensure functionality prior to testing Conducts and records routine equipment calibrations according to departmental procedures Responds promptly to phone inquiries from clinical staff and reference laboratories, providing accurate information and support Monitors inventory levels and notifies supervisor of supply shortages or replenishment needs Compiles and maintains statistical data for monthly and annual reports Follows written and verbal instructions with precision and attention to detail Communicates clearly and professionally in both oral and written formats Participates in seminars, workshops, and meetings to remain current with laboratory practices and advancements Adheres to safety protocols when handling biohazardous materials; consistently uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) Provides intermittent training and mentorship to interns, laboratory assistants, and junior staff as directed by the Laboratory Director Documents remedial actions taken to address quality control concerns or equipment performance issuesRequired Qualifications:
Phlebotomy principles, specimen labeling, handling, and transport procedures Medical laboratory technology, sanitation, sterilization, and safe disposal of contaminated materials Calibration and adjustment techniques for lab equipment; properties of chemicals and lab materials Clinical lab terminology and standard abbreviations across disciplines (e.g., Blood Bank, Chemistry, Microbiology) Troubleshoots mechanical issues and identifies performance concerns with lab instruments Performs accurate mathematical computations and maintains clear, organized records Prepares technical reports, charts, tables, and schedules personnel when needed Operates laboratory software systems (e.g., Laboratory Information System) Communicates effectively in both written and oral formats; gives precise instructions Builds harmonious relationships with diverse staff and patients, including those under stress Applies tact and empathy while interacting with individuals across roles and conditions Understands and explains laws, regulations, and procedures governing lab activities Works independently with strong manual dexterity and attention to detail Adaptable to varied shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call duty Committed to safety protocols, always using required protective equipment Actively seeks professional development through meetings, seminars, and workshopsPreferred Qualifications:

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness. Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have (A) at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, or academic research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or medical laboratory technology or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Based on assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing. Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biology, or medical laboratory technology may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience. II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, biology, medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field may substitute for the required experience. Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
