Heersink School of Medicine-Open Rank-Radiation Oncology Physics School/College School of Medicine Title Heersink School of Medicine-Open Rank-Radiation Oncology Physics Assignment Category Full-Time Rank Open Rank Tenure Status Open Tenure Payroll Status Faculty 12 Job Description Faculty Medical Physicist Opportunity - Radiation Oncology University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a clinically focused and academically driven Medical Physicist for a full-time, open-rank faculty position. Tenure status, academic rank, and compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
What We're Looking For:
  • Ph.D. in Medical Physics, Physics, or a closely related field
  • ABR certification in Therapeutic Medical Physics (or board-eligible with completed CAMPEP-accredited residency)
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement
  • Strong commitment to clinical excellence, teamwork, and academic collaboration
Clinical Role:
The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of clinical medical physics support, quality assurance, and radiation safety across our main campus and regional satellite clinics.
Clinical scope includes:
  • IMRT, VMAT, IGRT, respiratory gating
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
  • Interstitial and intracavitary HDR brachytherapy
  • I-125 eye plaque therapy, Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
  • Photons and electrons with advanced linear accelerator platforms
Technology & Infrastructure:
  • Varian platform: 2 TrueBeam, 1 Edge, 2 iX (with RapidArc and cone beam CT), 1 Ethos
  • 2 Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT simulators
  • Varian Bravos HDR unit
  • Treatment planning and R&V systems: Varian Eclipse/ARIA
Academic Environment:
Our physics team includes 15 Ph.D. physicists, working alongside 22 radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, therapists, and administrative leadership to provide high-quality care for more than 170 patients per day across UAB and satellite locations. We offer an accredited CAMPEP medical physics residency program and train two physics residents and ten radiation oncology residents annually. The department strongly supports academic development and expects faculty to build collaborative, clinically relevant research programs. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate across UAB's Heersink School of Medicine and its nationally recognized academic and research infrastructure.
