Position Summary The University of North Carolina is seeking a clinical radiation therapy physicist to provide services at two locations: the Departments of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital (Chapel Hill) and the University of North Carolina Cancer Care Center at Rockingham (Eden, NC.) This full time position will share responsibilities for the two locations with another physicist on staff.
Both The University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital (Chapel Hill) and The University of North Carolina Cancer Care Center at Rockingham (Eden, NC) are part of the broader University of North Carolina system. The Department of Radiation Oncology at Rockingham works under the guidance and oversight of the main Radiation Oncology Department located at the University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.
North Carolina Cancer Hospital, Dept of Radiation Oncology:
The department is currently staffed with 13 Radiation Oncologists, 7 Dosimetrists, 12 Medical Physicists, and 1 IT specialist. The clinic is equipped with 2 Elekta Versa accelerators, 1 Varian TrueBeam accelerator, 1 CyberKnife system, 1 Mobetron intraoperative accelerator, 1 Elekta HDR system, 1 VariSeed LDR prostate system, 1 Philips large bore CT simulator, and 1 Philips MR-simulator.
North Carolina Cancer Care Center at
Rockingham, Dept of Radiation Oncology:
The Rockingham facility is staffed by 1 radiation oncologist, 1 physicist, and 4 radiation therapists, treating between 10 - 20 patients per day with 3D, IMRT/VMAT, SBRT treatments on a single Elekta Infinity linear accelerator.
Shared resources: Clinical treatment planning systems (TPS) include Raystation TPS, Accuray Precision TPS for CyberKnife, Oncentra HDR Brachy TPS, and VariSeed LDR Brachy TPS; Record and Verify uses Mosaiq. Ancillary systems include VisionRT. Dosimetry services are centralized.
The successful candidate will:
Provide part-time clinical radiation therapy physics services for both facilities, together amounting to a full-time position;
Provide clinical radiation therapy physics services for IMRT/VMAT, IGRT, SBRT, SRS and brachytherapy programs;
Perform staff physicist duties such as chart checking, machine calibrations, and quality assurance;
Oversee and direct junior staff during acceptance and commissioning of equipment, gathering of dosimetry data, as well as external beam and brachytherapy treatment planning;
Be responsible for the precise and accurate delivery of radiation treatment plans and for the safety of patients and treatment staff.
Ideal candidates should have a desire to practice clinical medical physics, excellent verbal and written communications skills, strong technical skills, and a commitment to establishing new technologies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements MS or PhD in Medical Physics/Physics/Engineering or related field.
ABR board eligible or board certified in Therapeutic Medical Physics.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Experience in IMRT/VMAT, IGRT and SBRT.
Specific experience with Elekta, Mosaiq, Raystation and RadCalc.
Familiarity with Radiation Safety and State of North Carolina regulations.
