The DIII-D National Fusion Facility is the U.S.'s flagship magnetic confinement fusion research facility, focusing on developing the solutions and scientific basis for future fusion reactors, including a net electric pilot plant and ITER. We currently have an exciting opportunity to join the DIII-D program as a Sciences Manager, responsible for planning and managing the technical performance of the Plasma Edge Physics group under the Experimental Science Division. The position reports to the manager of the Advanced Materials Evaluation group.
Responsibilities include:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- + Leadership or oversight of multiple projects in the areas of divertor science and high heat flux handling, such as DOE awards and grants + Manage all phases of assigned research projects from inception through completion.
+ Contribute to the development of annual and long-term DIII-D objectives. + May be responsible for decisions that have an extended impact on outcomes where erroneous decisions could result in critical delays and modifications to projects. + Identification and proposal of further business opportunities, by expansion of existing awards and pursuing opportunities to win additional funding awards + Proposing and coordinating internal R D work to develop new ideas, and related marketing to communicate and help win opportunities. + Develop private sector partners and provide them support to bolster the case for funding awards and DIII-D, and potentially secure direct private sector support. + Direct a group of several personnel + Ensure work conducted by the group has outstanding scientific quality through technical oversight of the group. + Oversee personnel development, goal setting and performance monitoring of the group to ensure a high function team with good career development. + Track and work within required budgets, identifying needs for additional resources and personnel, and finding roles for personnel, as necessary.
OTHER OBJECTIVES
- + Manage all group activities for science projects including planning and managing technical performance to ensure objectives are attained.
+ Participate in and coordinate the establishment of design concepts, criteria, and scientific efforts for DIII-D research. + Generally provide scientific support, advice and engagement according to program need and expertise. + Contribute to the preparation of proposals, annual experimental plans, program extension and renewal plans, GA business opportunities, and IR D projects. + Ensure technical leadership and excellence is maintained by participating in the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required scientific talent. + Supervision of personnel as appropriate. + Oversee the development of and ensure the security of the unit's proprietary technology, and maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information. Job Qualifications:
- + Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in science or a related technical field as well as eleven or more years of progressively complex experience in science with at least five of those years having management responsibilities.
May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education. + Demonstrates technical expertise in the application of scientific principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones. + Must possess the ability to resolve complex management and technical problems, develop effective plans, set milestones, oversee execution and identify corrective actions for successful delivery of projects. Some formal training is beneficial or may be offered. + To be able to present plans to the research teams and at senior levels in a compelling way through writing and presentations. + Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a collaborative multi-institutional environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.
