Jacksonville, FL Fellowship Term:
July 2026 - June 2027 About the opportunity Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens (JZBG) is looking for a Social Science Research Fellow to support applied research and evaluation initiatives that advance our conservation, education, and audience engagement goals. Working alongside internal teams and an external social science consultant, the Fellow will contribute to the full research cycle — from tool design and data collection to analysis and final reporting. Findings directly shape program development, strategic planning, and behavior change initiatives. This is a project-based fellowship with defined deliverables and timelines. We're looking for someone who brings independent expertise and exercises sound professional judgment in how they approach their work. What you'll do Design, implement, and evaluate social science research projects related to learning, conservation, and guest engagement Develop data collection tools including surveys, interview guides, and observational protocols Conduct interviews, focus groups, surveys, participant observation, and participatory co-design sessions Analyze qualitative and quantitative data using appropriate software and methods Synthesize findings and prepare summaries, reports, and recommendations for staff and leadership Conduct literature reviews to inform assessment design and project planning Collaborate across departments and contribute to continuous improvement efforts What we're looking for
Required:
Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program, with an undergraduate degree completed by July 2026 Background in social science research methods, including survey design and qualitative and quantitative analysis Experience with interview design, facilitation, and synthesis of findings Proficiency with qualitative platforms (e.g., MAXQDA, NVivo) and quantitative tools (e.g., SPSS, JMP) Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively across cross-functional teams
Preferred:
Graduate studies in social science, environmental education, conservation psychology, public engagement, evaluation, or a related field Experience in museums, zoos, aquariums, nonprofits, or educational institutions Familiarity with empathy-based frameworks, behavior change strategies, or audience engagement approaches Additional requirements Available to work on-site every week, including occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays Comfortable working in both virtual and in-person settings, including outdoor field environments Valid driver's license with a clear driving record required for occasional local travel About JZBG Our mission is "Connecting communities with wildlife and wild places."
