Job Description:
About Slater Matsil, LLP Slater Matsil, LLP. is a globally-focused Intellectual Property (IP) boutique of technology-minded individuals. We maintain a client-centric perspective, whether we are discussing technology with inventors in the design room, developing IP strategies with management in the board room, or advocating for our clients' rights in the courtroom. Our blue chip client list includes many of the world's largest semiconductor, electronics and telecommunications companies, and several of North America's pre-eminent law firms, who look to us for our unique combination of legal and technical expertise. The Opportunity We are seeking an exceptional Patent Agent/Technical Advisor with a strong foundation in semiconductor process integration and advanced device technology. This is a dynamic role at the heart of the innovations driving technology. While semiconductor process and device work will anchor your practice, you'll also have the opportunity to engage with the broader electrical engineering ecosystem that surrounds it. The Role As our Patent Agent/Technical Advisor, you will serve as the critical bridge between inventors and the patent process. You'll need to rapidly absorb complex process integration schemes and device physics concepts, translate them into robust patent applications, and advocate for our clients' intellectual property rights with patent examiners.
Your Daily Impact:
- Engage directly with process integration engineers, device physicists, and circuit designers to understand breakthrough innovations at the leading edge of semiconductor technology
- Draft comprehensive patent applications that capture subtle but commercially critical distinctions in process flows, device structures, and materials
- Navigate patent prosecution with USPTO examiners, articulating fine technical distinctions in fabrication sequences, structural features, and device behavior
- Transition fluently between process-level innovations (e.
g., a new spacer scheme or epi module) and the system-level /layout context in which those innovations are deployed Technical Expertise Required We need someone with genuine depth and breadth in electrical engineering who can confidently navigate (one or more of the below): Primary focus areas (modern devices are inherently 3D - we need someone who can visualize structures from cross-sections, follow a flow through deposition, etch, and fill steps, and see how features come together in three dimensions):
Transistors:
Fin
FET, GAA
nanosheet, CFET
Process Integration:
FEOL/MOL/BEOL, gate stack, epi, spacers, contacts
Unit Processes:
EUV, etch, deposition, CMP, implant, anneal
Memory:
DRAM, 3D
NAND, MRAM/ReRAM/PCM
Packaging:
2.5D/3D, hybrid bonding, TSVs, chiplets Secondary / supporting areas (a plus):
- Analog, mixed-signal, RF, and digital circuit design
- Embedded systems, DSP, and firmware
- Power electronics and control systems
What Sets You Apart Essential Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline (Ph.D. strongly preferred)
- 5+ years of hands-on engineering experience in industry/academia, R D or product development
- Demonstrated understanding of how Fin
FET, GAA
nanosheet, and CFET transistors are fabricated and formed
- Proven ability to quickly master new technical domains
- Patent bar eligibility (current registration preferred but not required)
Critical Skills:
?
Technical Credibility:
Inventors trust that you understand their flow ?
Rapid Learning:
Conversant in new modules and architectures in days, not months ?
Spatial Reasoning:
Visualize 3D structures from 2D cross-sections and mentally walk a process flow ?
Clear Technical Writing:
Translate intricate structural details into precise patent language ?
Systems Thinking:
See how one module change ripples through the rest of the flow The Ideal Candidate You're an engineer who gets energized by building things at the atomic scale. You've worked on real flows or devices and understand the practical constraints such as yield, variability, manufacturability. When an inventor sketches a cross-section, you're already visualizing the full 3D structure and asking about the spacer, the epi, and the work-function metal. Why Slater Matsil? Your technical expertise is genuinely valued here. Over 50% of our patent professionals have advanced degrees, and many were inventors themselves. You'll work with world-class inventors from Fortune 500 semiconductor companies in a technology-first culture that rewards technical excellence. Growth Opportunities ? Distinguished Patent Agent track - a leadership path unique to our firm, available after 8+ years with a proven record ? Progression to Patent Attorney (with law degree) ? Deep specialization in high-value semiconductor technology areas Application Process Please submit to careers@slatermatsil.
