Exempt Scope of Job Trainee position to pursue advanced research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development. Works under minimal supervision with some latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment in research. Performs research and related scholarly work required for the successful execution of assigned projects, with a primary focus on chemical sensing, water quality monitoring, and sustainable materials for environmental applications. Description of Duties The following is a listing of typical duties that may be applicable to the position: Developing, testing, and analyzing research related to chemical sensing technologies in water; designing, fabricating, and optimizing sensing platforms and functional materials for environmental monitoring applications; Aiding in the development of a survey instrument, testing the instrument and disseminating the instrument; Writing narrative summaries of the research results, and related tasks under the supervision of the faculty member assigned; Conducting background electrochemical sensing research; Developing and implementing an evaluation plan and preparing progress reports as needed; Studying, testing, and maintaining accurate data identified as relevant and/or best practice systems from research results obtained through national studies; Designing and implementing training activities as required; Teaching one to two courses per semester in conjunction with faculty member, if assigned; Publishing in peer-reviewed publications related to the focus of the research activities assigned; and performing other job-related duties as assigned. Supervision Received General supervision from immediate faculty supervisor Supervision Given May provide supervision to assigned staff. Required Education Doctoral degree in Chemistry, Material Science or a related field from an accredited University (based on funding restrictions degree may need to have been conferred within a set period of time previous to assuming position). Preferred Education Demonstrated research background in materials synthesis, environmental sensing, water treatment, PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) related research, or related areas. Licenses/Certifications None. Required Experience None. Preferred Experience Academic background and research experience in one or more of the following areas: electrochemistry, chemical sensing, analytical chemistry, materials characterization, organic synthesis, nanomaterials, environmental monitoring, or water quality research. Equipment Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications. Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
