Job Description

USNH Employees should apply within Workday through the Jobs Hub app This position supports federally funded social science field research through the USDA Forest Service's National Visitor Use Monitoring Program. The employee will conduct on site, face to face visitor surveys with national forest visitors as part of a temporary, project based data collection effort. Duties may include visitor intercept surveys, field based survey administration, communication with recreation visitors, travel to assigned survey locations, data entry, coordination with project staff, and other related research support tasks as assigned. Work is expected to occur during the 2026 field season, with exact start and end dates based on project needs, employee availability, and funding. The position is fully grant funded and not considered essential staff. Duties/Responsibilities Data Collection in the Field (70%) Conduct visitor intercept surveys at designated sites Follow standardized NVUM protocols to ensure high-quality data collection. Use tablet computers, signage, and uniforms as provided. Accurately record and upload survey data. Travel and Independent Work (20%) Travel independently to remote field sites across the forest. Work without direct supervision in varied terrain and weather conditions. Maintain communication with the principal investigator and research team. Equipment Management and Reporting (10%) Manage assigned field equipment and data collection tools. Report survey counts and field notes as instructed. Participate in training sessions prior to fieldwork.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent. Some experience in customer service, fieldwork, or research is preferred but not required. Preference will be given to candidates who reside in or near the Bartlett or North Conway, NH area, due to the on-site nature of the work.
Required Licenses & Certifications :
Valid U.S. driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. Ability to follow protocols and work independently. Comfort navigating to and working in remote outdoor locations. Basic computer skills; ability to use tablets and enter data. Reliable, courteous, and professional demeanor.
Other Requirements :
Must be at least 20 years of age and able to pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications :
Prior experience with survey research or field data collection. Familiarity with outdoor recreation or public lands. Enrollment or background in natural resources, recreation, or social science. Residency in or near the Bartlett or North Conway, NH area, due to the location-specific nature of the work.
