Job Description
Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located within the Evaluation Team, Office of the Director, Policy, Evaluation and Training Division (DPET), Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The incumbent will report directly to the Chief, Evaluation Team. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; uses data and analysis to assess trends; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues that may impact mandate delivery and performance of peacekeeping operations.;
- Supports the implementation of the Comprehensive Planning and Performance Assessment System (CPAS) in peacekeeping missions and its use to inform planning, policy and best practices.
- Assists senior official with briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
- Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
- Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in an assigned area.
- Provides input into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes.
- Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to assigned area.
- Supports the Chief of the Evaluation Team in analysing CPAS data to identify policy gaps effecting mandate delivery, in coordination with peacekeeping missions and relevant offices in UN Headquarters
- Performs other related duties as required.

Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. EducationA first-level university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area. Job - Specific QualificationNot available. Work ExperienceA minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, evaluation of organizational performance or related area. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE), or the G to P Examination (G to P). Experience with MS Office 365 including MS Power BI or equivalent data systems for data visualization, MS Power App, and MS SharePoint is desirable. Experience delivering training on organizational performance assessment methodologies, data collection and data visualization is desirable. Experience in collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information from multiple sources, and producing analytical reports and briefings to support senior-level decision-making is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. French is desirable.
