  • Philadelphia, PA 19121 Apply Overview Level Entry Position Type Temporary Part Time Job Shift Day Travel Percentage None Category Education Apply Description The Founder's Hall collection includes one of America's greatest single-owner collections of papers and objects, left to the school by Stephen Girard, the richest man in America when he died in 1831, as well as a rich school-history collection documenting the unprecedented school Girard endowed for disadvantaged youth and provide resources for the study of educational, architectural, and Philadelphia history.
In preparation for upcoming master planning for the museum, the Collections Intern will work under the Director of Historical Collections on a research project on Stephen Girard as a philanthropist and his role in the broader history of philanthropy. They will review secondary resources to compile known information on Girards philanthropy and philanthropic influences; will conduct primary source research in his letters and financial papers, and will assemble resources on the broader history of philanthropy to provide a guide for contextualizing his work. The Intern will also participate in the general life of the museum, including assisting with tours, learning about object handling and cataloging, attending meetings, etc. In addition to their research work, the Intern will undertake a cataloguing project to document a set of un

Skills:
The intern must have strong organizational ability and good attention to detail. S/he is self-motivated and capable of working independently.
Projects Include:
  • Research and collect information pertaining to the history of philanthropy and Stephen Girards role in such affairs
  • Compile known information on Girards philanthropic efforts and influences
  • Conduct primary source research in his letters and papers and combine with secondary resources to build a broader context of his philanthropic work
  • To ensure the safety of our students, we require criminal background checks (FBI and Pennsylvania), child abuse clearance, and substance abuse testing of all our applicants offered employment. The student will be working primarily on the second floor of Founder's Hall, and must be comfortable climbing the staircase multiple times a day.
