  • Contingency and Geographic Response Plans Would you like to help ensure California is ready to respond to an oil spill and contribute to plans that protect environmental, cultural, and economic resources during a spill?
The Department of Fish & Wildlife's Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) is seeking to hire one detail-orientated and self-motivated Student Assistant to support updates to regional oil spill contingency plans and contact lists. The incumbent will work with the Geographic Response Plan Coordinator and Tribal Coordinator within OSPR's Outreach and Training Unit in West Sacramento. This is a unique opportunity to support OSPR scientists and analysts as they develop and revise oil spill response plans for major waterways throughout the state. The incumbent will assist with validating contacts, updating response plan content, ensuring consistency across plans, and drafting outreach letters. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. 52 per hour Minimum Qualifications Demonstrated ability to gather information from a variety of sources, evaluate, and analyze information. Ability to conduct work on a computer while in an office setting or remotely. Ability to make calls to external entities using provided computer. Experience using Microsoft Word and Adobe. Detail-oriented with strong organization skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and persuasively orally and in writing and conduct themselves courteously and professionally in the workplace. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience contributing to detailed environmental planning or emergency response documents. Experience using Microsoft Access or other database system(s). Previous experience ensuring documents meet accessibility requirements (reading order, table and image tagging, color contrast, etc.). Duties and Responsibilities Assist in the 5-year administrative review and update of Geographic Response Plans by verifying contacts, ensuring information is accurate and current, cross-referencing documents and databases for consistency, and conducting other document maintenance tasks. Review data provided by the Native American Heritage Commission to update tribal contacts using an Access database. Draft outreach letters to California Native American tribes. Coordinate with OSPR's Geographic Information System (GIS) unit to ensure site strategy pages are included in the response database. Potential to attend optional field visits to validate site strategies and conditions. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an hybrid environment. Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
