Plant Trials Assistant Position Summary:
Plant Trials Assistant supports the successful execution and maintenance of all plant trials within the bullpen. This role focuses on planting, labeling, tracking, and caring for trial plants while ensuring accurate data collection, inventory management, and overall site organization. The position works closely with the New Plant Trials Manager and cross-functional teams to maintain high standards for trial integrity and presentation. Key Responsibilities Collaborate with the New Plant Trials Manager to ensure all incoming trial plants are planted promptly upon arrival. Print and apply all necessary labeling, including stake labels, adhesive labels, and breeder codes, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Create work orders for incoming trials and submit orders to the Propagation Team Lead for processing. Collect, document, and monitor trial observations and data—including planting dates, bloom time, growth habit, plant performance, finish time, losses, and notable new varieties—and report findings to the Plant Trials Manager. Capture and maintain weekly photographic records of plant trials throughout the growing season. Participate in bullpen tours in collaboration with key staff (Plant Selections Manager, CEO, Propagation Coaches, Grow Area Coaches) at least monthly during the growing season and assist with executing action items identified during walkthroughs. Participate in bi-weekly bullpen team meetings with the New Plant Trials Manager. Perform routine plant care activities such as pruning, spacing, pinching, and weeding. Maintain an organized, secure bullpen with properly placed plant material and appropriate handling of confidential material and information. Ensure bullpen inventory including plant movements and scrappages are up-to-date and accurately reflected in internal systems. Ensure the bullpen remains secure and that confidential plant material and information are protected. Assist in preparing plant material for tradeshows, sales meetings, and other events. Plant Trials Manager Works with: New plants team, propagation team Required Skills & Qualifications Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams Comfortable using basic computer systems and photography tools Excellent organizational skills, including notetaking and record-keeping Ability to manage photographic documentation of plant material Physically capable of repetitive lifting and performing manual labor in an outdoor environment Willingness to learn and contribute in a team-oriented environment Basic computer skills for data entry, reporting, and record maintenance Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in horticulture, nursery operations, or plant care Familiarity with plant trialing, propagation, or inventory systems Basic plant identification knowledge Outdoor work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions Physical activity including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods Success in This Role Success in this position is defined by accurate trial tracking, well-maintained plant material and trial site, reliable reporting and data collection, and strong collaboration and communication with the new plants and propagation teams.
