Job Description

Utah Valley University is seeking student employees to assist Dr. Kevin Shurtleff with the Utah Lake algae removal project. Students will operate the UVU algae harvesting boat on Utah Lake throughout the summer. Students will work five flexible hours per five days a week for a total of 25 hours per week. Work will be done through Friday, August 14, 2026.Each day, two students will load the boat with supplies, take the boat to the designated harvesting area on Utah Lake, maneuver the boat, and operate the harvesting equipment in a grid, sweep pattern across the designated area. During harvesting, students will be required to monitor equipment, make scientific measurements, and enter them into a logbook every hour. Once or twice each week, the students will clean the filter presses and off-load the harvested algae from the boat to the dock and take it to the landfill. Students will be trained by Dr. Shurtleff with all required safety and operating procedures. Must be a current UVU student. Must be able to follow written and verbal directions, operate equipment, take various scientific measurements, keep records, and operate a boat and equipment safely after training. Must be able to work closely with another person and communicate effectively with their boatmate and supervisor. Must be able to work outside, sometimes in bright sunlight or rainy weather for 5 hours/day. Must be able to lift 50 lbs with help from another person.
