POSITION TITLE

Subsistence Fisheries Scientist Subsistence Fisheries Scientist Job Description

OBJECTIVE

Coordinate and administer BBNA's Subsistence Fisheries Program activities across the region through cooperative work with Village, State, and Federal entities under the Partners for Fisheries Monitoring Program, with particular emphasis on subsistence fisheries research and developing local capacity through internships.

Job knowledge / documentation required:

Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries Biology, Natural Science, Natural Resource Management, Anthropology or related field. Knowledge and understanding of Federal Subsistence Fisheries Monitoring Program. Ability to review, compile and organize technical information about subsistence use patterns, understand subsistence laws and regulations. Ability to establish and promote effective professional relationships and open communications with colleagues, Tribal officials, regulatory and service agencies, and individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Must be goal oriented and able to work independently with little direct supervision. Must be willing/able to do extensive travel in & out of region.

Preferred:

Advanced degree in science, fisheries biology or related. Knowledge of Bristol Bay region, people, cultures, and of subsistence lifestyle. Specific knowledge of subsistence fisheries management and research issues.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS

Achieve Program goals by: Facilitating identification of important issues and information needs related to subsistence fisheries management on federal lands. Assisting with the conceptual development and project design of fisheries resource monitoring projects to meet information needs identified, including identification of potential projects, assistance in preparation of proposals and investigation plans with Fishery Information Service staff, and facilitation of partnerships among rural and governmental agencies to foster capacity building, and strengthen project proposals and project implementation. Providing on-site technical assistance to fisheries resource monitoring projects to ensure projects are properly administered, technically sound, and achieve study Serving as a co-investigator on selected fisheries projects. Tasks include performing field data collection, statistical analysis, writing reports, and making oral presentations to rural, agency and professional organizations. Coordinating and maintain on-going summer fisheries internship program to promote an understanding of fisheries biology, natural resource management, harvest monitoring, traditional ecological knowledge, Alaska subsistence fisheries management, and career opportunities for Bristol Bay students and subsistence users. Assisting principal investigators in recruiting rural residents for seasonal positions and contracting opportunities (e.g., transportation equipment, test fisheries, equipment storage). Conducting community and regional educational outreach to promote and improve understanding of fisheries science and natural resource management with emphasis on the Fisheries Resource Monitoring Program and Partners for Fisheries Monitoring Program. Monitoring and be prepared to respond to key federal and state initiatives relating to the changes which impact subsistence users, including proposed legislation and rulemaking, regulatory changes, and Coordinating with BBNA Natural Resources Department staff and member tribes to identify other subsistence resource needs and provide services to address these needs through development and implementation of research projects and related Provide Fiscal management by: Administering budgetary and contractual obligations for Partners for Fisheries Monitoring and other project grants. Timely, accurate reports to funding agencies. Identifying and pursuing new funding sources.

Fostering internship program to promote an understanding of fisheries biology and management, harvest monitoring, traditional ecological knowledge, Alaska subsistence fisheries management, and career Providing mentorship to fisheries interns, students and others who are interested in pursuing higher education and careers in fisheries, natural resource management and ecosystem sciences. Communicating job expectations; scheduling, and planning activities of interns, local hire assistants and/or occasional temporary staff. Participating in planning, selection process, direct supervising, and evaluating of program personnel including fisheries Understanding and following personnel procedures for tracking time and routing documentation. Assisting and/or training of project staff to assure services are delivered in an efficient, professional manner and in the case of an internship that a quality educational experience is also achieved. Maintaining an appropriate system of regular Protect program integrity and client privacy by: Abiding by BBNA's policies in regard to confidential information and keeping any confidential information gained through employment at BBNA absolutely confidential during and after this employment.

Keeps Management Informed by:

Preparing a comprehensive monthly and annual report to USFWS and Natural Resource Department Director. Developing and implementing written detailed program goals and objectives on an annual basis. Developing and /maintaining a system for retrieving data and files. Travel in and out of region by: Scheduling well planned trips to provide services, participate in training, workshops and to ensure communications and exchange of current information significant to Village, Regional, Tribal, State, and Federal entities. Contribute to the overall team effort by: Welcoming a variety of new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to add value to the organization; helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed.

WAGE:

$57,174.00-$117,351.00 per year.
