Job Description :
This position is a subject matter expert in animal movement patterns, habitat connectivity, and designing structures or systems to facilitate safe animal passage and promote healthier ecosystems. The individual will be responsible for leading studies and as needed, supervising and directing staff in methodologies of collecting field data, preparing GIS data sets, analyzing data, and overseeing the development of nature-based, sustainable, cost-effective design solutions that addresses safe passage and long-term connectivity considerations for a range of species considered.
Duties:
Provide expertise on nature-based sustainable solutions that can enhance habitat, protect wildlife, and deliver ecological co-benefits Lead the coordination, planning, and research design of studies to construct viable wildlife crossings and/or fish passages. Collaborate with Teams (scientists and engineers) to integrate ecological considerations into project designs, including mapped or identified wildlife core areas and linkages. Participate in community outreach and/or assist the client in raising awareness for the ecological values of connectivity Assist clients to develop monitoring plans to track ecological indicators and evaluate the success of implemented projects Identify and prepare grant applications to support client funding opportunities for new connectivity and linkage planning projects Assist clients with the development of long-term strategies and conservation objectives Identify opportunities for habitat restoration, species conservation and ecological connectivity Lead teams of biologists or other environmental professionals Collaborate with other staff for business development activities, including presenting and networking at conferences Attend professional organization meetings Conduct research on project issues and constraints Serve as primary author on reports as expertise allows Assist with completion of technical reports, work plans, and other technical documents, as needed, and the ability to apply GIS modeling and graphics capabilities as appropriate. Perform editorial and technical reviews of draft technical documents for content, organization, clarity, consistency, grammar, and conformity with the applicable style guide(s) Ensure documents meet relevant technical standards Foster and maintain good working relationships with state and federal agency staff, tribes, and private sector clients Take initiative, resolve problems, and improve procedures as appropriate to assure tasks are completed effectively Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):
Minimum Education:
Master's degree in wildlife, fish biology, or a closely related field A minimum of twenty (20) years of experience in research, fieldwork, and oversight assessing wildlife connectivity or fish passage issues and developing solutions. Experience conducting wildlife surveys (ground or air) or fish surveys, reading and identifying animal tracks and scat, trapping, baiting, applying GPS collars to wildlife, or other field data collection techniques Experience analyzing data Ability to keep and maintain accurate and complete records of work conducted Experience organizing and maintaining data Experience reviewing, writing and editing complex documents Excellent verbal and written communication skills Exemplary organizational skills Attention to detail Ability to work as a team member Competencies (To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies): Communicative
