POSITION SUMMARY
This position provides daily care and treatment of stray and adoptable animals at the animal services facility. The incumbent will handle potentially dangerous or aggressive animals. The incumbent in the position may be required to walk, stoop, stand, crouch, run and lift weights in excess of 50 pounds. Skill and ability in the use of various chemicals to maintain sanitation of the shelter is required. The safety of the general public is affected by the well being of the animals involved. Owners of the animals are also affected by the treatment their animals receive. Contacts are typically with co-workers, general public, animal owners and prospective owners of animals. High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience providing custodial care of animals preferred. Experience using Windows and Chameleon is preferred. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license preferred.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Provides care to all animals in the custody of the county. Provides food and water to animals at the shelter. Cleans and disinfects kennels using the prescribed method. Administers vaccinations, medications, testing and other shelter medicine related tasks as required. Monitors the general health and behavior of the animals, reporting any change to the supervisor and documenting into Chameleon. Photographs animals that are offered for adoption to the public in a prescribed manner that is compatible with changing techniques in marketing animals for adoption. Scan all animals in the custody of the county for the presence of a radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip implant. Performs implantation of radio frequency identification (RFID) microchip in such a manner as set forth by the AVMA for owners wishing to acquire the service. Utilizes the in-house ID engraver to manufacture tags for any member of the public who wishes to acquire this service. May be assigned to bathe and groom impounded animals. Escorts visitors through the animals shelter who are looking to adopt a pet and to answer any questions concerning the animals. Works with community service workers/volunteers to ensure compliance with department policies. Performs euthanasia and/or assists in treatment on all species of domestic and wild animals as needed. Performs related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and skill in the care, treatment and handling of animals. Skill and ability in the proper use and the safe handling of chemicals. Ability to distinguish colors to make identification of the breed of animals. Ability to evaluate the general health of animals. Ability to handle potentially dangerous or aggressive animals. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees and the general public. Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations is required.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience providing custodial care of animals preferred. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license preferred. A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
