Job Description

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state's renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life. LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of Fisheries exists to ensure that aquatic resources are sustainable for present and future generations of Louisiana citizens by providing access and scientific management. The Biologist position will be domiciled in either Lacombe, Baton Rouge or Lafayette, LA as part of the south region of the Aquatic Plant Control Program. It is responsible for coordination of aquatic plant control efforts conducted in south Louisiana as well as conducting vegetation assessments, providing recommendations for treatment, and providing aquatic plant management recommendations for private ponds. General supervision is received from a higher-level biologist, as needed.
IDEAL CANDIDATE CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING COMPETENCIES
Knowledge and strong understanding of aquatic organisms and habitats, specifically freshwater Ability to identify and map aquatic vegetation Experience with operation and maintenance of outboard powered vessels Good observational and analytical skills Good interpersonal skills Ability to think analytically and problem-solve Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a team environment Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing Knowledge and strong understanding of research and statistical methods A bachelor's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources. Job Duties:
As a Biologist, you will play a vital role in studying living organisms and ecosystems, conducting research, and analyzing data to support conservation efforts, resource management, and scientific understanding. In this role, you will: Identify, map, and monitor aquatic vegetation across assigned areas Conduct field sampling and collect biological and environmental data Monitor and document departmental and contracted treatment activities Compile, analyze, and report data findings to support project objectives Assist with biological and environmental studies, including fisheries stocking efforts Support the development of aquatic habitat restoration and public access improvement projects Maintain, repair, and calibrate equipment including boats, trailers, vehicles, and spray systems Represent the department in meetings, workgroups, and public interactions with stakeholders and community partners

Appointment Type :
Probational Appointment, Job Appointment, Detail to Special Duty, Promotion (open to all statewide classified and agency wide permanent status employees). Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a Probational appointment if selected. If filled as a Job Appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a Probational Appointment should funding become available.
