Job Description

Many rural communities rely on a state park as a major source of economic development. The State Parks mission is to protect and enhance natural and cultural resources, provide first-class recreational and education facilities and opportunities, and promote public safety to benefit and enrich the lives of visitors. State Parks is committed to this mission, employing professional, dedicated staff to ensure that parks are cared for and preserved to the highest professional standards. State Park programs provide safe and fun educational experiences for the whole family Why does the job exist? This position will support the Division's mission and operations by planning for and implementing natural resource conservation projects for the enjoyment of park visitors; ensuring compliance with laws and regulations that protect natural resources during the course or capital improvements; and helping incorporate natural resources into park education programs. How does it get done? 1) Plan and implement natural resource conservation and environmental protection on State Park lands. 2) Support environmental and natural resource compliance requirements to facilitate park improvements and operations, including coordination with agency partners, federal and state. 3) Lead environmental and natural resource education efforts on New Mexico's state parks. Who are the customers? Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park. Visitors throughout the State of New Mexico and surrounding states, who are boaters, campers, hikers, birders and fishermen. Ideal Candidate Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park. Visitors throughout the State of New Mexico and surrounding states, who are boaters, campers, hikers, birders and fishermen. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Range Management, Range Science, Wildlife Biology, Environment Science, Conservation Science, Natural Resources, Watershed Management, Anthropology, or Archeology and two (2) years of experience in Forestry or Range Management, Range Science, Wildlife Biology, Environment Science, Watershed Management, Anthropology, or Archeology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Moderate travel in region/state wide area. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions This position is an administrative position that spends the majority of its time in an office setting, with extensive exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. This position must be able to carry out the basic physical tasks required of an office environment. This position has statewide travel to support park locations and projects, spend time in the field, and attend meetings with managing partners.
