Job Description

Position Summary The Raystown Lake Project is a federally operated flood control facility located within the beautiful ridges and valleys of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District; Raystown Lake maintains a conservation pool of approximately 8,300 acres surrounded by approximately 21,000 acres of land. Stretching over 28 miles in length with 118 miles of shoreline, the operation of Raystown Lake provides flood protection, general recreation, the enhancement of downstream fisheries, wildlife mitigation, and hydro power. This position is to aid in the Raystown Lake Project's environmental stewardship program, and will focus on three main categories: wildlife management, forest and land management, and fisheries management. Specific work will include threatened and endangered species, habitat management, invasive species, and artificial habitat structures. Location Hesston, PA Schedule May 25, 2026 - September 5, 2026 Key Duties and Responsibilities This position will support the environmental stewardship program at Raystown Lake. Tasks may include, but are not limited to, wildlife tree maintenance, chestnut orchard maintenance, turtle monitoring, deer browse studies, terrestrial/aquatic invasive surveys, and boundary inspection. Daily tasks will require the service member to work outdoors which may include walking/hiking several miles daily through wooded/forested areas with potentially steep and uneven terrain. Service member may encounter a variety of outdoor hazards such as poisonous plants, venomous snakes, ticks, and others The service member must be in good physical condition to accomplish these tasks. Marginal Duties Educating the public about aquatic invasive species Performing tree survivability studies Assisting with other tasks as needed Required Qualifications Must be at least 18 years old on start date. Preferred Qualifications ArcGIS (or similar software) experience Experience using a handheld GPS unit. Basic knowledge of flora and fauna in Pennsylvania Student pursuing a degree in natural resource management, environmental science, wildlife management, biology, or a related field. Hours 40 per week Living Accommodations Housing is not provided. Compensation $500 - weekly Living Allowance All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes. Personal Vehicle Information Recommended Additional Benefits Intern will be exposed to many different aspects of natural resource management at Raystown Lake. Through this job you will develop skills in data collection, vegetation management, and wildlife habitat management.
