Job Responsibilities This employee will be responsible for conducting educational programs for K-12 students and the general public at the Marine Resources Center, in the ACE Basin and at other Department facilities.
Job Duties Include:
Conducting educational field trips for K-12 students to provide accurate and up-to-date information that enhances knowledge and awareness of natural resources issues and the SCDNR mission. Serving as a deckhand on board the Education Vessel Discovery. Coordinating stewardship-based projects with students and teachers. Assisting with the preparation of informational and educational material. Assisting with the planning and implementation of teacher trainings and workshops that focus on increasing use of estuary and marine science information and data in the classroom. Supporting outreach efforts of the Coastal Stewardship Section through participation in some of the major Division public events. Maintaining educational fish tanks and caring for animals collected. individual must be available for routine day travel with occasional overnight travel including working odd hours. Minimum and Additional Requirements A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area. Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification from the American Red Cross or equivalent. Will be certified by the U.S. Coast Guard and serve as Deckhand aboard the Educational Vessel Discovery. Preferred Qualifications Two (2) years of experience in environmental education. Field experience in coastal environments as well as science communication skills are highly desired. Experience leading the public in field-based stewardship activities. Excellent public relations skills and proven writing skills; ability to communicate and work well with a broad spectrum of the public. Basic knowledge of biological principles, ecology, and the dynamics of coastal South Carolina. Ability to gather and organize data in collaboration with SCDNR and partner researchers and present oral and written information in clear, concise and accurate manner. Ability to work outdoors on a boat and in the field under multiple weather conditions and be able to pull a trawl net. Graphics familiarity and a level of creativity necessary to develop new and innovative ways to increase public awareness of natural resources desirable.
