Job Description
Land Services Department Seasonal Recycling Center Assistant Level:
110 This position is temporary-seasonal, with employment not to exceed six (6) months. Position is full-time at 40 hours per week, not eligible for County benefits.JOB SUMMARY
A seasonal position that assists the Recycling Center Supervisor. Assists and directs the public bringing recyclable materials. Waits on customers in the Budget Shop, calculating purchases, making change, and keeping basic records. Operates baler, glass crusher, aluminum separator, fork lift, and other equipment to process recyclable products. Essential Functions/ Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Assists the public bringing materials to the Recycling Center. Helps individuals to assure materials are properly separated and placed in appropriate bins. Cleans up contributions placed on site from previous night. Operates baler, glass crusher, magnetic separator, oil filter crusher, fork lift, bandsaw and other equipment to process recyclable materials. Sorts mixed paper. Empties cardboard trailers with forklift. Drives truck to remote locations to swap trailers and clean-up areas. Maintains site by cleaning shop, mowing lawn and picking up debris. Waits on customers in the Budget Shop; calculating purchases, making change, and keeping basic records. Weighs aluminum cans and determines payment for individuals bringing aluminum cans for sales. Directs part-time and seasonal employees in absence of Recycling Center Supervisor.Non-Essential Functions:
Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent, plus six (6) months of related experience. Math knowledge to estimate volume, figure charges, handle money, and keep basic records. Ability to work outside and in an unheated building year-round in often undesirable conditions. Ability to perform strenuous work to include lifting, carrying, and shoveling to take in and process contributions. Ability to learn to operate required pieces of machinery in a safe and proper manner. Ability to work with the public.Desired:
Knowledge of solid waste issues. Required Certifications/Licenses Must have a valid driver's license.Internal/External Relationships:
Work with general public and businesses on a daily basis.Working Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office environment and at a variety of outdoor sites. Frequent local driving is required on all types of roads; often required to drive or work in adverse weather conditions, and in remote areas. Ability to operate vehicles and all other job related equipment. Work involves working in roadways, on waterways, and construction sites; subject to work around moving traffic and heavy equipment; with and around hazardous chemicals, gases, raw sewage, demolition debris, and solid waste; subject to uneven terrain, pets, wild animals, fumes, heavy equipment noise at inspection sites; subject to sunburn, poison ivy, and insect bites when outdoors. There is potential exposure to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, and inclement weather conditions.Physical Requirements Of This Position:
Physical strength to lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects. Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception. Ability to be mobile over a variety of steps, ramps, ladders and confined spaces. Hear and speak effectively to communicate in person and over the phone with the public, employees, and others. Visual acuity to read computer screens and printed documents for long periods of time. Manual dexterity to type on a keyboard and use a computer mouse. Perform manual tasks such as handwriting and searching through documents. Office work may include reaching for documents and supplies, standing or kneeling to search through file cabinets, fingering to find files, holding documents, and repetitive motions such as typing and sorting. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
