  • Full-time $110,000
  • $135,000 a year
  • Full-time Academica California is looking for a Senior Accounting Director to lead the accounting function for our California schools.
Based in our Roseville corporate office, this senior-level role oversees the day-to-day work of the accounting team. You will own the integrity of the books across a portfolio of charter schools, direct month-end and year-end close, manage audit readiness, and serve as the trusted finance partner to school leaders and our corporate team. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will shape how the team works, raise the standard of what we deliver, and help build the financial discipline that supports strong schools.
A B O U T A C A D E M I C A
Academica is one of the largest and most respected education management and service organizations in the country, supporting high-performing charter schools across Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Idaho, and California. We partner with independent school boards to deliver back-office excellence — finance, operations, HR, compliance, and growth — so educators can focus on students. Academica California serves the boards and schools operating in the state.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Lead the California accounting team, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and professional development. Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles across assigned school entities, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and GAAP compliance. Oversee all general ledger activity, journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations —including bank, investment, payroll, and balance sheet accounts. Partner with school leaders and the Chief Financial Officer on the annual budget cycle, mid-year revisions, and ongoing budget-to-actual reporting. Manage the annual audit process end-to-end, prepare schedules, respond to auditor requests, and resolve findings before they become issues. Ensure compliance with California charter school financial reporting requirements, including interim reports, LCFF-related reporting, and CDE/county office filings. Review and approve accounts payable, cash disbursements, and payroll entries; serve as the control check for financial transactions. Build and maintain internal controls that protect school assets and reduce audit risk. Translate financial data into clear, decision-ready reports for principals, board treasurers, and the corporate finance team. Identify process improvements and bring them forward — the role is expected to improve the function, not just run it.
WHAT YOU BRING
Active California CPA Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; Master's preferred. Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two years managing a team. Demonstrated expertise in budgeting, full-cycle general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and external audits. Strong command of GAAP; fund accounting or governmental/school accounting experience is a significant plus. Proficiency with modern accounting systems (Sage Intacct experience preferred) and advanced Excel. Clear, direct written and verbal communication — able to explain financial concepts to non-finance leaders. Demonstrated judgment, discretion, and integrity. This role handles sensitive financial information and represents Academica to school boards and auditors.
