- Develop, implement, and maintain company-wide safety programs for collection operations, transfer stations, recycling facilities, maintenance shops, and office employees.
- Promote a behavior-based safety culture across all operational levels.
- Lead company safety initiatives to reduce recordable incidents, vehicle accidents, and workers' compensation claims.
- Establish safety KPIs and monitor trends to drive continuous improvement. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA, OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, and other regulatory safety requirements from the federal, state and local levels.
- Oversee maintenance of required safety documentation including training records, Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, and Hearing Conservation programs.
- Manage OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements in collaboration with HR.
- Coordinate regulatory inspections and audits. Training & Workforce Development
- Coordinate, design and deliver safety training programs for: o Commercial drivers o Heavy equipment operators o Mechanics and shop staff o Facility employees o Conduct new hire orientation, refresher training, and leadership safety coaching o Ensure compliance with DOT driver qualification and safety training requirements Incident Management
- Lead investigations of vehicle accidents, workplace injuries, and near-miss incidents.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Manage workers' compensation claims in collaboration with HR and insurance providers.
- Track and report safety metrics and incident trends. Field Audits & Risk Assessment
- Oversee ride-a-longs, perform job site inspections, and facility safety audits.
- Identify hazards in collection routes, transfer operations, recycling facilities, and maintenance operations.
- Implement corrective measures and engineering controls to mitigate risks. Collaboration with Operations
- Partner with operations managers, dispatch, fleet maintenance, and HR to integrate safety into daily operations.
- Support safe rollout of new equipment, routes, and processing technologies.
- Participate in operational planning to ensure safety considerations are incorporated. Emergency Preparedness
- Evaluate and maintain emergency response plans for: o Vehicle incidents o Facility fires o Hazardous material incidents o Severe weather events o Coordinate emergency drills and response training
- Mobility within an office and a field environment for indefinite periods of time.
- Involves working in a waste and hazardous waste collection, disposal, recovery, recycling environment.
- Involves working in an environment with farm animals and plant materials.
- Involves sitting, standing, walking, reading, decision making, reaching above shoulder level, occasional lifting and carrying up to 70 pounds, using both hands for simple and firm grasping, climbing stairs and fine finger manipulation, e.g., keyboard and mobile phone skills.
- Requires clarity of hearing.
- Requires the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, in person, in writing and by telephone and email.
- Must be able to safely operate company vehicles in an urban and suburban environment, including on residential streets and in a variety of weather conditions.
- Works Monday
- Friday and may include weekend work. Early morning to mid-day schedule to provide supervision to operations employees, and occasional evening, weekend, late night or early morning hours may be necessary.
- May be called into work during emergencies.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary to collection, processing and disposal work.
- Geography of the service area including the locations of streets, city/town boundaries and topographical and man-made hazards.
- Federal, state and local safety regulations, regulatory bodies and requirements.

- Cross-functional collaboration Required
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 7-10+ years of safety leadership experience in heavy industry, transportation, waste management, recycling, or construction.
- Strong knowledge of Cal/OSHA regulations and DOT safety requirements.
- Experience managing safety programs for commercial vehicle fleets and industrial facilities.
- Proven ability to conduct accident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Excellent communication and training skills. Preferred
- Experience in solid waste collection, recycling, or transfer station operations.
- Professional safety certification such as: o CSP (Certified Safety Professional) o ASP o CHST o SMS (Safety Management Specialist) o Familiarity with SWANA safety standards and industry best practices
- Experience working in unionized environments
Pay:
$130,000.00- $170,000.
