Job Description
The Senior Scientist, Microbial Physiology and Fermentation will lead basic and applied research using fermentation experiments and other biological models and analyses. In this role, you will develop and advance procedures for understanding anaerobic mixed culture fermentation, mentor junior scientists, and drive the scientific strategy of our microbiology program as part of a multidisciplinary team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Establish and lead internal microbiology research capabilities by planning and equipping a laboratory environment capable of aerobic and anaerobic microbiological research. Develop, own, and maintain SOPs for key laboratory workflows; train and mentor junior scientists and colleagues as needed. Design, conduct, analyze, and present results from experiments within cross-functional project teams aligned with scientific and operational objectives. Lead experiments to isolate, bank, functionally characterize, and manipulate aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from a variety of sample types and sources. Perform anaerobic fermentation with open mixed cultures (archaea and bacteria) and determine the impact of macro- and micro-nutrients on population dynamics. Apply metagenomics to generate insights and leads for improving titer, yield, and volatile fatty acid profiles. Lead fermentation experiments to increase lab-scale production and product yields (approx. 1-10 L) using DOE and statistical methodology. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including production, quality assurance, and process development to address scientific and quality-related challenges. Determine specific technical approaches to successfully deliver project goals on a startup timeline and budget. Conduct experiments with a high level of excellence to ensure precise and accurate data. Promote a culture of safety, responsible laboratory practices, and continuous improvement. Some weekend and holiday coverage will be required.QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
